Fairhope was founded by followers of economist Henry George as a single tax colony, and the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation still manages land across town. That reform-minded start drew artists, writers and thinkers, and the town has kept a creative streak. Today the downtown is compact and easy to walk, with hanging baskets and planted corners on nearly every block. At the bottom of Fairhope Avenue, the bluff drops to the bay, where the Fairhope Municipal Pier stretches a quarter mile over the water next to a rose garden and a sandy public beach.
Spend a morning browsing boutiques, bookstores and gift and home shops downtown, then stop by the Fairhope Museum of History to learn how the colony worked. Lunch and dinner lean toward Gulf seafood and chef-driven restaurants, and the town has plenty of bakeries and coffee for slow mornings. End the day on the pier at sunset, which is close to a town ritual. For nature, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a short drive south. Weekend evenings bring locals out to stroll the shops, and the First Friday art walk keeps galleries open late.
Fairhope questions, answered
What is Fairhope known for?
Its bayfront setting, flower-lined streets and arts scene. Fairhope was founded in 1894 as a single tax colony, a utopian experiment that attracted artists and progressive thinkers, and the town has been a magnet for writers and painters ever since. The Fairhope Municipal Pier, the downtown shops and the spring Arts and Crafts Festival are the big draws.
When is the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival?
The festival is held each March in downtown Fairhope and has been running for about seven decades. Artists from around the country set up along the streets, and the town fills with visitors for the weekend. Book rooms early and plan to park outside downtown and walk in. Spring is also when the downtown flower plantings are at their best.
Is downtown Fairhope walkable?
Very. The core of downtown is a few blocks around Fairhope Avenue and Section Street, so you can park once and walk to shops, restaurants and the museum. The walk down to the pier and beach is downhill, and coming back up the bluff is a short climb. Many visitors bike around town too.
