Athens is one of the oldest towns in Alabama, founded in 1818, and it still feels like a place built around a courthouse square. The Limestone County Courthouse anchors downtown, Athens State University sits a short walk away, and the historic streets around Beaty and Houston hold blocks of antebellum and Victorian homes. It is close enough to Huntsville and Decatur for an easy day trip, but small enough that a weekend here moves at a slower pace. Locals are proud of the town’s music history, and on fall weekends you can hear fiddles and banjos drifting across the square.
Spend a morning on the square browsing antique and vintage shops and boutiques, then stop at the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives, which holds artifacts from the Revolutionary War to the present. For lunch, look for Southern cooking and meat-and-threes, or a coffee shop near the courthouse. In the evening, check the calendar for live music, and on a fall weekend drive out to the historic village of Mooresville, one of the best preserved small towns in the state, where the whole village is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Athens questions, answered
What is Athens, Alabama known for?
Old-time music and storytelling. The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention has filled the Athens State University campus with fiddle, banjo and mandolin competitions every fall for more than five decades, usually around the first weekend of October. Later that month, the Athens Storytelling Festival brings nationally known tellers to town. Athens is also known for its courthouse square and some of the oldest buildings in North Alabama.
When is the best time to visit Athens?
October is the standout month, with the Fiddlers Convention early in the month and the Storytelling Festival around the fourth weekend, plus cooler weather for walking downtown. Spring is pleasant too, when the historic districts host walking tours and gardens are in bloom. Summers are hot and humid, so plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings.
How do I get to Athens?
Athens sits just west of I-65, where US 72 and US 31 also pass through town. Huntsville International Airport (HSV) is about 25 minutes away, the closest commercial airport. Downtown Huntsville and Decatur are each roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car, Nashville is about an hour and a half north on I-65, and Birmingham is about an hour and a half south.
Where should I stay in Athens?
Most hotels are clustered near the I-65 and US 72 interchanges, a short drive from downtown. For something with more character, look for inns, cottages and small places to stay closer to the historic districts. During the Fiddlers Convention weekend rooms fill up quickly, so book early or consider staying in Huntsville or Decatur and driving in.
Is downtown Athens walkable?
Yes. The courthouse square, the shops and restaurants around it, the Alabama Veterans Museum and the edge of the Athens State campus are all within a few blocks of each other. The Beaty and Houston Street historic districts are an easy stroll from the square. You will want a car to reach Mooresville, the interstate hotels and the surrounding countryside.
