Oxford is where many travelers on I-20 between Birmingham and Atlanta pull off, and it has grown into the largest city in Calhoun County. It shares a metro area with neighboring Anniston, and between the two you have museums, mountain trails and a deep well of history. Oxford’s own draw is a set of well-kept parks, plenty of places to eat and sleep, and a handy location: Cheaha State Park, the highest point in Alabama, and Talladega Superspeedway are both within easy reach, which makes Oxford a practical home base for a weekend in the foothills of northeast Alabama.
Choccolocco Park is the city’s big outdoor space, with a lake, walking trails and sports fields that host regional tournaments. Oxford Lake, closer to the center of town, has a walking path and a playground, which makes it a good stop with kids. The Oxford Performing Arts Center brings concerts, comedy and stage shows to town. For shopping, Quintard Mall and the shopping centers off I-20 cover the basics, and the local restaurants range from barbecue to Mexican kitchens.
Oxford questions, answered
How do I get to Oxford?
Oxford sits right on I-20, about 60 miles east of Birmingham and 90 miles west of Atlanta. The closest major airport is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (BHM), about an hour away. US 78 and US 431 also pass through, and Anniston is just a few minutes north.
Is Oxford a good base for Talladega race weekends?
Yes. Talladega Superspeedway is roughly 20 to 25 minutes west on I-20, and Oxford has the largest cluster of hotels in the area. Rooms go fast and prices climb on NASCAR weekends, so reserve early. Browse local places to stay for other options nearby.
What is there to do outdoors near Oxford?
Choccolocco Park and Oxford Lake are the in-town favorites for walking and picnics. Cheaha State Park, about 35 to 40 minutes south, has hiking, overlooks and the state’s highest summit. In neighboring Anniston, the Chief Ladiga Trail and Coldwater Mountain bike trails are close by.
What is the difference between Oxford and Anniston?
They are neighbors in the same metro area. Anniston is the older city, with the historic downtown, the museums and the Freedom Riders National Monument. Oxford is where you will find most of the newer shopping, hotels and interstate access. Most visitors spend time in both.
