About

Oxford, Alabama sits along the I-20 corridor in Calhoun County, an area better known for its dense cluster of national hotel chains than for anything resembling a boutique stay. Southern Soho Boutique Hotel, just off Exit 186 on Colonial Drive, set out to change that when it reopened under new, independent ownership in the fall of 2025. The building itself has history behind it: constructed in 1990, it spent decades operating under corporate flags including Jameson Inn and Quality Inn before general manager Brian Breedwell and a small design team stripped the old concept down and rebuilt it into something the area had not seen before.

Rather than the interchangeable rooms typical of interstate lodging, every guest room at Southern Soho is built around its own theme. Travelers can choose from a steampunk suite constructed with century-old repurposed doors, a train-themed bedroom, a horror room, an anime room, a video game room, and a “spicy couples” suite, with additional themed rooms still being added over time. Breedwell told the Anniston Star that the goal was to give repeat visitors a reason to keep coming back, noting that a guest could “stay 15 times and have a different experience each time.” Designers Robert Wilson and Jessica Rush worked alongside him to bring the rooms to life, and much of the furniture inside them was handcrafted on site rather than ordered from a catalog.

A number of the rooms carry a charitable purpose alongside their design. A pink-themed room raises money for the American Cancer Society, and a purple room supports Parkinson’s disease research through a connection to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Other rooms are dedicated to veterans and to broader mental health causes, and a patriotic-themed room rounds out the collection. Custom epoxy floors and locally sourced lumber and wood slabs run through several of the spaces, giving the hotel a handmade, workshop feel that is unusual to find inside a roadside property just off the interstate.

The city took notice of the transformation. At a ribbon-cutting held on November 5, 2025, Oxford Mayor Alton Craft told the owners the concept “gives a whole new meaning to staying in a hotel,” adding that the city appreciated them bringing something distinctive to town. That sentiment reflects the broader shift underway at the property: a corporate-branded interstate motel converted, room by room, into a locally run destination with its own identity, built by people who live in the area rather than a franchise office somewhere else.

Southern Soho sits at 161 Colonial Drive, close to Oxford Commons and within easy reach of Quintard Avenue’s retail corridor and Oxford Lake Park, making it a workable base for visitors passing through on I-20 as well as those in town for events at the nearby exchange centers. The property is pet-friendly and offers free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a 24-hour front desk, along with private bathrooms and mini-fridges in the guest rooms. Reviews on travel sites are mixed on the finer points of housekeeping consistency, which is worth knowing going in, but guests consistently single out the design work and the staff’s willingness to walk visitors through the different themed rooms before they book.

For travelers who have grown tired of the sameness of interstate chain lodging, Southern Soho offers something genuinely different within Oxford’s city limits: a small, independently run hotel where the rooms themselves are the attraction. Between the handcrafted furniture, the charity-linked design choices, and a building with three decades of local history behind it, the property has carved out a niche that none of the surrounding chain properties along I-20 can claim. It stands as one of the few truly independent lodging options in a city otherwise dominated by familiar national brands.
