Madison started as a stop on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, and the old Main Street, with its brick storefronts beside the tracks, still sits at the heart of the Madison Station Historic District. Around it, the city has grown quickly thanks to Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park next door in Huntsville, so you will find good schools, newer neighborhoods and a busy restaurant scene along US 72 and County Line Road. It is a family friendly base for exploring the Huntsville area, with the airport and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center both close by.
Spend an evening at Toyota Field, home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. During the day, walk the Bradford Creek Greenway or hike the short loop at Rainbow Mountain Preserve, then wander Main Street for lunch and a look at the Clay House Museum. Madison has plenty of casual restaurants, Asian kitchens and Mexican and Latin spots, plus bakeries and family activities all over town. On summer nights, the crowds heading to the ballpark give the city a small-town festival feel.
