About

On Highway 72 West in Madison, Alabama, Epiphany Boutiques runs a women’s clothing shop built by a mother and daughter, Dawne and Jess, who have grown the business from a single rack inside another store into two standalone locations. The pair began selling clothing out of the Off Campus Bookstore in Huntsville in 2011 and briefly expanded to a similar setup in Tuscaloosa that same year, before opening the first standalone Madison store in 2013, two years after that first bookstore rack. A second standalone store followed in 2014 on the square in Athens, Alabama, and the two locations have operated together ever since.

The shop’s approach centers on hands on curation: for the last several years Dawne and Jess have traveled to markets all over the country, personally touching each piece and searching through thousands of items at wholesale markets before selecting what makes it onto the sales floor, aiming for trendy, affordable clothing and accessories rather than a single narrow style. That buying process means the racks change often, with new arrivals coming in regularly rather than in occasional big seasonal drops. As the two put it on their own site, between them they are raising nine children while trying to, in their words, do all the things: work, parent, grandparent, run errands, and occasionally play, and the shop’s stated goal is to help customers feel confident while they do the same.

Inventory spans casual tops, dresses, loungewear, and graphic sweatshirts, including a line that supports adoption awareness, alongside jewelry and accessories meant to round out an outfit without pushing prices into designer territory. The adoption-themed pieces carry particular meaning for the shop: with one of the owners in the process of a domestic infant adoption, Dawne and Jess have used the sweatshirt line as a small fundraising platform for the cause, tying a piece of clothing directly to a cause the family cares about rather than treating it as a generic graphic tee. Because the Madison and Athens stores share buying decisions, a shopper who strikes out at one location can often check the other for the same piece in a different size, an advantage the two-store setup gives Epiphany over a single standalone boutique.

Epiphany also runs an online store, launched in 2015, that carries some of the same pieces found in the Madison shop along with items exclusive to the website, giving out of town customers a way to shop the boutique’s selections without a drive to Highway 72. Online orders ship out within five business days, with free shipping on orders over $100 and a flat $9.75 rate below that, and returns are accepted within 30 days of shipment as long as tags are still attached and items have not been worn, washed, or altered. Even so, the physical Madison location remains the heart of the operation, run day to day by the same mother-daughter team that started the business.

The Madison store keeps daytime hours Monday through Saturday and stays closed on Sundays, a schedule geared toward shoppers running errands during the week or on a Saturday outing along the Highway 72 corridor. As the owners put it themselves, the goal is simply to help a customer feel confident while she conquers her world, whatever that world looks like on a given day between work, kids, grandkids, and errands. For Madison residents who want a locally owned alternative to the chain boutiques clustered nearby, Epiphany’s decade-plus track record and family ownership set it apart, and its recognition as a local Retailer of the Year reflects the loyalty it has built over more than ten years in the city.
