When the boll weevil wiped out cotton crops here in the early 1900s, farmers in Coffee County switched to peanuts and found new prosperity. In 1919 the town dedicated the Boll Weevil Monument, a classical statue of a woman holding a weevil aloft, to thank the pest for forcing that change. It still stands at the center of downtown, and fiberglass weevils decorated by local artists now dot the streets. Enterprise is also a military town, sitting at the gate of Fort Rucker, home of Army aviation, so you will see helicopters overhead.

Start downtown with the monument and the Depot Museum, which covers local and railroad history in the 1903 station. A short drive brings you to the U.S. Army Aviation Museum, with well over a hundred aircraft, and Lake Tholocco on post for fishing and boating. Enterprise has a solid lineup of Southern restaurants and barbecue, along with coffee shops and boutiques in the downtown storefronts. The town is small enough to see in an afternoon, and it pairs easily with a day in Dothan, about half an hour east.

Enterprise questions, answered

Why does Enterprise have a monument to the boll weevil?

The boll weevil devastated cotton in the region around 1915, pushing farmers to plant peanuts and other crops instead. Diversifying turned out to be a boon for the local economy, and in 1919 the town dedicated the Boll Weevil Monument as a tribute to the change. It is often described as the only monument in the world honoring an agricultural pest.

How close is Enterprise to Fort Rucker?

Very close. Enterprise sits just east of Fort Rucker, the home of Army aviation, and many soldiers and families live in town. The U.S. Army Aviation Museum near the Daleville gate is about 20 to 30 minutes away. Visitors without military ID typically need to pass through a visitor center check before entering post, so bring a valid ID and check current access rules.

When is the best time to visit Enterprise?

Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather for walking downtown and getting out on Lake Tholocco. Summers are hot and humid. If you are pairing a visit with Dothan, November brings the National Peanut Festival about 30 minutes east.
