Vestavia Hills takes its name from Vestavia, the Roman temple-style estate that banker and former Birmingham mayor George Ward built on Shades Mountain in the 1920s. The estate is gone, but its garden gazebo, the Sibyl Temple, was moved by the local garden club and still stands along US 31 as the city’s landmark. Today Vestavia is a family-oriented suburb spread across Jefferson and Shelby counties, with wooded neighborhoods, strong schools and pretty overlooks on the mountain. Downtown Birmingham is about 15 minutes north.
Much of the eating and shopping happens in two places: the US 31 corridor and Cahaba Heights, a neighborhood near US 280 that joined Vestavia in 2002 and has a cluster of locally owned restaurants, coffee shops and gift and home shops. Wald Park has a pool, ballfields and a dog park, and Liberty Park on the city’s eastern side is a hub for youth sports. The Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest is worth a stop for its wooded setting and boardwalk trail, and families will find plenty of family fun during the spring Dogwood Festival.
Vestavia Hills questions, answered
What is Vestavia Hills known for?
Views, schools and the Sibyl Temple. The city sits on Shades Mountain with sweeping looks over Birmingham, and its public schools are among the most sought after in the state. The Sibyl Temple, a small domed gazebo modeled on the Temple of Sibyl in Tivoli, Italy, is the city’s best-known landmark and a popular photo stop.
How do I get to Vestavia Hills?
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is about 20 minutes away. US 31 runs north and south through the city, connecting to Homewood and downtown Birmingham, while US 280 and I-459 serve Cahaba Heights and the eastern side. Downtown Birmingham is about 15 to 20 minutes by car, and Hoover is right next door.
What is Cahaba Heights?
Cahaba Heights is a neighborhood on the east side of Vestavia Hills, near US 280 and I-459. It was a separate community until it was annexed into Vestavia in 2002. Today it is a favorite for its small, locally owned restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques, all within a few blocks of each other.
Where should I stay near Vestavia Hills?
Vestavia itself is mostly residential, so many visitors stay along US 280, at the I-459 interchanges, or in nearby Homewood and Hoover, all within a 10 to 15 minute drive. Check our places to stay section for locally owned options in the area.
When is the best time to visit Vestavia Hills?
Spring is especially pretty, when dogwoods and azaleas bloom across the mountain and the city holds its Dogwood Festival. Fall brings clear days and good views from Shades Mountain. Summers are hot and humid, so save the overlooks and parks for early mornings and evenings.
