Essential MVMT
About
On Morgan Drive in Vestavia Hills, Essential MVMT teaches Pilates the way Joseph Pilates originally designed it, a detail that matters to the studio’s founder, Stuart Browning, and to the regulars who have followed the practice for years. This is a Classical Pilates studio, not a franchise reformer chain, and the difference shows up in how classes are built and taught.
Browning, a National Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT), founded the studio after a first Pilates class left an impression that stuck. By his own account, the session left him feeling more connected to his body, centered, lighter, and at peace, but also genuinely challenged, physically and mentally, and that combination became the philosophy behind the business. He opened Essential MVMT in the fall of 2021, and his stated hope for the studio is to spread a bit of both light and love through movement. Classes are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels across Mat, Reformer, Tower, and Chair formats, so a newcomer and a longtime practitioner can both find an appropriate class on the same day’s schedule.

Group classes are only part of the offering. The studio also runs private, semi-private, and trio lessons for people who want more individual attention, along with private group class events built around a customized workout and personalized playlist for occasions like bachelorette parties or team outings. For teens, there is a dedicated Pilates Summer Series, a rare offering in a category more often aimed strictly at adults.
The studio’s equipment is built on the Balanced Body line, a widely used standard in the Pilates industry, and the current teaching staff runs about a dozen people deep. Angela Mintun manages the front desk while also teaching Pilates, and instructors Lauren Rumore, Logan Yatooma, Nikki Stanford, Paige Hubbard, Maria Sealy, and Kate Lickert round out the core Pilates roster. Katie Drozd and Bella Bertellotti teach both Barre and Pilates, Jamie Grimes leads Barre classes, and Alicia Gilbert teaches the studio’s Yoga offerings.
Perhaps the most telling program at Essential MVMT is its teacher training track, built on Joseph Pilates’ original method rather than a shortened, studio-branded curriculum. That kind of investment in training new instructors from the ground up is not something every boutique studio takes on, and it signals a studio thinking beyond its next class roster. Candidates need to complete 25 Pilates classes and read Joseph Pilates’ own book, Return to Life, before training even starts, then work through Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Mat coursework before moving into a 600-hour comprehensive apparatus program covering reformers, the Cadillac, chairs, and barrels. The full path runs seven to twelve months and mixes five weekend intensives with monthly meetings and required test-outs, a structure closer to an apprenticeship than a weekend certificate course.

The studio has also added Barre and Yoga classes alongside its core Pilates offerings, plus on-demand content for members who want to practice at home between studio visits, and a dedicated app for booking classes on the go. That flexibility has helped the business build a loyal base in a neighborhood where schedules tend to be packed with school runs, work, and weekend sports.
Essential MVMT has picked up local recognition along the way, including 2023 and 2024 Vestavia Hills Magazine Best honors, a 2024 Quality Business Award, and a 2025 Best of Alabama honorable mention, with Browning himself named Best Personal Trainer in local voting and the studio recognized as Best Fitness Studio. The kind of grassroots votes tend to reflect a steady base of regulars rather than a marketing push. Community also shows up in smaller ways: client spotlights on the studio’s site highlight individual members by name, a small touch that fits a studio built around long-term relationships rather than one-off class packs.

For Vestavia Hills residents looking for a Pilates studio with real depth, not just a rotating cast of reformer classes, Essential MVMT offers a rare combination: a founder-led business, a classical method taught with intention, and a genuine investment in training the next generation of instructors.
