Daphne is the first town you reach on Mobile Bay’s Eastern Shore after crossing the causeway or the I-10 Bayway from Mobile, and it is the largest city in Baldwin County. Life here faces west toward the water, where sunsets over the bay are a nightly event. The town’s nickname comes from the jubilee, a rare natural event on summer nights when flounder, shrimp and crabs crowd into the shallows and neighbors grab gigs and buckets. It is mostly residential and easygoing, with older homes along Main Street and US 98 and newer neighborhoods spreading east.

Get outside at Village Point Park Preserve, the city’s largest park, where boardwalks and trails wind through woods and marsh to the historic Jackson Oak and the bay. May Day Park has a pier and boat launch that work well for an evening stroll or fishing. For food, the Eastern Shore takes Gulf seafood seriously, and you will also find easygoing burger and casual spots and coffee shops along US 98. Fairhope’s downtown is about 15 minutes south, and Mobile’s restaurants and museums are just across the bay.

Daphne questions, answered

Why is Daphne called the Jubilee City?

Mobile Bay is one of very few places in the world where jubilees happen. On certain calm summer nights, low oxygen water pushes flounder, crabs and shrimp right up to the shoreline, and locals on the Eastern Shore wade out to scoop them up. Daphne embraced the phenomenon as its nickname. Jubilees are hard to predict and usually happen before dawn, so seeing one takes some luck.

What is there to do in Daphne?

Most people come for the bay. Walk the trails and boardwalk at Village Point Park Preserve, visit the Jackson Oak, fish or watch the sunset from the pier at May Day Park, and launch a kayak along the shore. Daphne also makes a convenient base for exploring Fairhope, Spanish Fort and downtown Mobile, all within about 20 minutes.

How do I get to Daphne?

Daphne sits along I-10 on the east side of Mobile Bay, with three exits serving the city, plus US 98 and US 90 along the causeway. Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) is about 35 minutes away and Pensacola International (PNS) is about 50 minutes east. Downtown Mobile is roughly 15 minutes across the bay by car.

When is the best time to visit Daphne?

Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather for walking the bayfront parks and eating outside. Summer is hot and humid, but it is also jubilee season, so night owls may want to take their chances. Winters are mild, with cool evenings that make sunset at the bay pleasant almost year round.
