Mark’s Outdoors
About
Mark’s Outdoors has sat on the same corner of Montgomery Highway in Vestavia Hills since 1980, a piece of longevity the shop wears as a point of pride with its own tagline: same corner since 1980. The store began as a small bait-and-tackle shop opened by Mark Whitlock Sr. and his father Mo, and over more than four decades it grew into one of the region’s most complete outdoor and sporting goods retailers without ever leaving its original Vestavia Hills location.
The product mix reflects that gradual growth. Fishing remains part of the shop’s DNA, with rods, reels, tackle, and live bait still sold alongside the rest of the inventory. Firearms make up a major part of the business today, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, and suppressors, along with a full selection of ammunition. Archery equipment, optics, and hunting accessories round out the hunting side of the store, while outdoor clothing, footwear, and premium sunglasses from brands such as Costa, Maui Jim, and Native serve customers who are outfitting themselves for a day on the water or the trail rather than a hunt.

The shop’s stated buying philosophy is refreshingly plainspoken: if the staff would not carry an item into the woods themselves, it does not go on the sales floor. That kind of first-person product testing is a common claim among outdoor retailers, but it carries particular weight at a shop where the people making buying decisions have, in many cases, spent their whole working lives around the same product categories.
Mark Whitlock Sr. passed away in 2012, and for more than a decade afterward the business was run by his widow, Dana, and son, Mark Jr., who kept the shop rooted in Vestavia Hills through a period when several longtime independent outdoor retailers in the region closed or were absorbed by national chains. In January 2026, ownership passed to Day 21, LLC, led by CEO Russell Watts, in a transition the new ownership described not as a change but as carrying forward what Watts called a true Alabama family business into his own family’s hands, with plans to invest in inventory and resources while preserving the store’s identity and staff relationships.

That kind of ownership transition is always worth watching for a shop with this much community history, and Alabama Guide will continue to monitor how the store evolves under its new ownership. For now, Mark’s Outdoors continues to operate from its original Montgomery Highway address with the same broad selection of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear that generations of Vestavia Hills families have relied on, plus newer additions like electric bikes and dog accessories that reflect how outdoor recreation habits have shifted over the decades.
The shop offers complimentary parking directly on site, a small but real convenience on a busy stretch of Highway 31, and its straightforward return policy and knowledgeable staff remain frequently cited reasons regulars choose it over big box sporting goods stores nearby. Longtime customers of Mark’s Outdoors often mention the staff by name, a detail that speaks to the kind of relationship-based retail the shop has cultivated over more than four decades on the same Vestavia Hills corner, and one that the new ownership has publicly committed to maintaining as the business moves into its next chapter.

Mark’s Outdoors is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays, as well as on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July. For hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts in Vestavia Hills, it remains a rare thing: a genuinely local outdoor retailer that has outlasted most of its original competition.
