The Heavenly Donut Company
About
Along Cahaba River Road in Vestavia Hills, The Heavenly Donut Company has built a loyal following on a simple premise: handcraft the donuts fresh every day and let the shapes and flavors do the talking. The Vestavia Hills location, with a drive-thru that opens at 4 a.m., has become a regular stop for commuters and families alike since it opened in the Cahaba River Road retail center.
The company was started by Brock Beiersdoerfer, who trained at a Memphis-area donut shop before bringing the concept back to the Birmingham area and turning it into a small, family-run chain. The Vestavia Hills shop follows the same approach as its sister locations: donuts made from scratch, formed and fried in-house, with a rotating list of flavors alongside the classics.

The peach fritter is one of the shop’s most talked-about items, praised for keeping a crisp shell around a soft, fruit-filled center, and the old-fashioned donuts have picked up outside attention from food writers and television personalities over the years. On weekends, the Vestavia Hills location also turns out beignets, giving regulars a reason to time their visit for a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Some of that outside attention has specific names attached to it. Zagat has named Heavenly Donut the best donut shop in Alabama, singling out the peach fritter for a crunch on the outside and a center that stays creamy without losing the peach flavor. Food Network’s Alton Brown has said the doughnuts were out-of-this-world, and the shop has turned up in coverage from Thrillist and other outlets over the years, the kind of attention a lot of small donut shops never get.

Kolaches have also found a permanent spot on the menu, broadening the shop’s offering beyond the classic glazed ring and into savory-leaning pastry territory. The shop keeps a coffee program running alongside the donut case, so a stop here can just as easily be a full breakfast as a quick sweet fix on the way out the door.
The full donut case runs well past a basic glazed ring, with chocolate and caramel glazed options, strawberry and maple iced versions, and toppings that range from M&Ms and Reese’s Cup to coconut and red velvet, plus a maple bacon donut and a pumpkin spice version that shows up each fall. A rotating Donut of the Day adds banana pudding on Tuesdays, key lime on Wednesdays, cookie butter on Thursdays, and Nutella on Fridays. The two kolache flavors, andouille and jalapeno and cheddar, are served only in the morning, and the coffee menu stretches from drip coffee and cold brew to specialty espresso drinks like a caramel macchiato, a turtle deluxe latte, and a seasonal butterbeer frappe.

The Vestavia Hills location closes on Mondays, which regulars have learned to plan around, but stays open into the evening most other days, a schedule that sets it apart from a lot of donut shops that shut down by early afternoon. Free WiFi and a small seating area give the shop a second life as a casual meeting spot, not just a grab-and-go counter.
A Heavenly Rewards Club gives regulars another reason to keep coming back, starting new members off with a set of points just for signing up and adding a discount around their birthday. The Vestavia Hills shop is also joined by a second Heavenly Donut location at The Edge in Homewood, which runs on a slightly different schedule, including pastries-only service on Monday mornings when the Cahaba River Road store is closed entirely. Between the drive-thru convenience, the extended hours, and a menu that goes well beyond a basic dozen, The Heavenly Donut Company has carved out a steady place among Vestavia Hills’ regular breakfast stops.
