About

Beside South & Pine on Main Street in downtown Madison, Alabama, Blue Apple Books occupies a storefront that owner Robin Dauma designed to feel more like a living room than a retail store. Dauma spent nearly three decades as an educator in Madison City Schools, teaching everything from Pre-K classes to AP courses, and for 28 years she sponsored the district’s Destination Imagination program. When she opened Blue Apple Books a few years ago, she brought that background in fostering curiosity straight into the shop’s design.

The name comes from a question Dauma once heard: what would you do if you saw a blue apple growing on a tree? It became a small philosophy about welcoming the unexpected, and blue apple details are tucked throughout the store as a reminder. Along one wall, white bookcases hold much of the inventory, handcrafted by Dauma’s husband using wood from the Mississippi farm where she grew up, a detail that ties the shop back to her own history even as it stocks brand new titles.

New books arrive almost daily, with roughly 40 new titles added each week across categories for children, teens, and adults. The store also stocks Madison City Schools’ summer reading selections, a natural fit given the owner’s background in the district. For readers who prefer digital formats, the shop’s online catalog connects to Bookshop.org for ebooks and to Libro.fm for audiobooks, extending the store’s reach beyond what fits on the physical shelves on Main Street. What has made the shop a local fixture, though, is its support of regional writers: nearly 80 local authors have had their books featured on Blue Apple’s shelves, and about 90 percent of them have hosted an event in the store, whether a launch party, a signing, or a simple conversation with readers.

That steady stream of author events, paired with a biweekly newsletter about new releases, has turned the shop into something closer to a community meeting spot than a simple retail counter. A staff member at the Madison Public Library has said people visit because of the sense of community Robin has created, and the shop welcomes outside groups to hold book clubs, classes, and workshops on site. It also takes part in citywide literary events such as the Rocket City Book Crawl. Every purchase, whether it is a single paperback or a stack of holiday gifts, comes with the same free daily gift wrapping the store offers on its South & Pine side.

The children’s section draws particular attention from Madison families, stocked with picture books, early readers, and middle grade titles that rotate alongside staff recommendations. Because Dauma spent her career in early childhood and elementary classrooms, she has a practiced eye for what keeps young readers engaged, and that experience shows in how the shelves are organized for browsing rather than simply shelved by publisher category. Teens and adult readers get similar attention, with staff picks displayed near the front of the store and sections covering fiction, nonfiction, and regional interest titles about Alabama history and culture. The overall catalog behind the shop, once online and special orders are counted alongside what sits on the shelves, runs into the thousands of individual titles, giving Dauma and her staff plenty of room to special order a book that is not already in stock.

Blue Apple Books is open seven days a week, with evening hours Thursday through Saturday that stretch to 8 p.m., making it possible to squeeze in a browsing trip after work or dinner downtown. For Madison readers who would rather support an independent bookstore than order from a national retailer, it remains the only one of its kind in the city.
