About

On Hughes Road in Madison, Alabama, Bicycle Cove sells and services bikes out of a shop built by a family whose own relationship with cycling started, somewhat unexpectedly and unpromisingly, with a mountain biking accident back in the 1990s. Founder Chris Leven’s 1998 accident led him deeper into the sport rather than away from it, and after years working in bike shops to build his knowledge of the industry, he opened the first Bicycle Cove location in Hampton Cove, near Brownsboro, on January 28, 2012, at what is now 5575 Highway 431 South, Suite 102.

The business has stayed a family operation since then, and it shows in how the shop is staffed and run day to day. Chris’s wife, Jessica, left a career in counseling to join him as co-owner, bringing customer service instincts that complement his technical know-how, while their son Max grew up around the shop and developed his own passion for cycling along the way. That family involvement shows up in how the shop talks about its mission, which staff describe as treating customers like family rather than as one-off transactions, whether that customer is a first-time rider picking out a cruiser or a longtime racer chasing a specific component.

The Madison store, which opened in 2018, sells bikes from brands including Trek, Electra, and Aventon’s line of e-bikes, alongside closeout models for shoppers hunting for a deal, and Trek financing is available for customers who would rather spread out the cost of a new bike over time instead of paying all at once. It sits alongside the original Hampton Cove location, and the two stores share inventory knowledge and repair expertise, though each keeps its own set of hours and staff on the sales floor, and a customer can call either location’s dedicated line, or reach the business by email, if a specific bike or part needs tracking down between the two shops.

Repair services make up a significant part of the shop’s day-to-day business. Beyond simple flat tire repair, Bicycle Cove offers three tiers of tune-up packages priced for different needs and budgets: the Good Tune at $90 covers derailleur and brake adjustments, wheel truing, and a chain lube; the Better Tune at $175 builds on that with an off-the-bike ultrasonic drivetrain cleaning; and the Best Tune at $275 strips the entire bike down to be cleaned and tuned to what the shop calls perfection, including removing, cleaning, and degreasing the headset, bottom bracket, and hubs before rebuilding it. Beyond those set packages, the shop also handles cable and housing replacement, disc brake bleeds, suspension service, and other minor adjustments on any make or model of bike, not just the brands it sells new. No appointment is necessary for most repair work, and estimates are free, a policy the shop applies whether the bike in question came from Bicycle Cove or somewhere else entirely. Staff also maintain guides to local cycling clubs, greenway routes, and Redstone Arsenal’s cycling rules for riders who commute onto the base, local knowledge built up over more than a decade in the area.

The Madison location keeps consistent hours Tuesday through Saturday and closes on Sundays and Mondays, a schedule geared toward weekday commuters and weekend riders alike. For cyclists in Madison who want a knowledgeable, family-run alternative to ordering a bike online sight unseen, Bicycle Cove’s decade-plus history and hands-on repair shop set it apart from the sporting goods chains along Highway 72, and the free estimates and no-appointment repair policy make it an easy place to walk in with a flat tire or a squeaky brake without planning a special trip around it.
