About

On Main Street in downtown Madison, Alabama, Zion Gourmet Popcorn traces its start back to a vision founder Sandra Polk says she received in 2011, years before the business itself existed. She named the shop after her granddaughter, Zion, inspired partly by the old hymn ‘We’re Marching to Zion,’ and began selling her popcorn out of a booth at the Limestone Flea Market from August 2015 to January 2016, before eventually moving into a trailer and then into the permanent storefront the shop occupies today. The gap between the vision and the first sale, roughly four years, gave Polk time to plan the business slowly rather than rush a launch before she and her family were ready.

Family involvement runs through the whole operation, start to finish. Polk and her husband decided to wait on opening the shop so he could support the new venture, and her mother promised to help out early on; when her mother passed away before the doors opened, Polk pressed on with the dream anyway. Her son later found the trailer that served as the shop’s first mobile location, parked near Harvest, which Polk cleaned up and used to sell her popcorn before the business found its permanent home on Main Street. That family-built history shows up in the shop’s branding, which still centers on Polk’s own story rather than a generic gourmet snack concept.

The menu covers a wide range of popcorn flavors, air-popped daily and made in-house with all-natural ingredients, real butter, and real cheese, alongside fudge, chocolate-covered treats, and caramel apples made from Granny Smith apples hand-dipped in the shop’s own recipes. Bestsellers include the Zion Mix, a sweet and salty blend of buttery caramel, cheddar cheese, and white cheddar cheese priced between $40 and $95 depending on size, along with Cheddar Cheese popcorn running $36 to $80, Pecan Turtle at $27, and Caramel popcorn between $36 and $90. Other flavors on rotation include Fruity Popcorn, Caramel Squares, and Chocolate Drizzled varieties, alongside classic combinations and seasonal specials, and the shop leans into game-day themes during football season, a popular pull given the shop’s location in a college sports-heavy part of the state.

Zion Gourmet Popcorn also leans on gift packaging for holidays, birthdays, and corporate orders, an easy stop for shoppers browsing Main Street who want a sweet treat as a hostess gift rather than another candle or picture frame. The shop has more recently added crochet classes for beginners through advanced crafters, a sign of how the business keeps expanding past its original popcorn counter and into the same kind of hands on programming that has taken hold at other Main Street storefronts nearby. Its downtown location puts it within easy walking distance of Blue Apple Books, South & Pine, and the other small shops that make up the historic Main Street district, so a popcorn run often turns into part of a longer stroll through downtown Madison.

Hours run a little differently than most downtown Madison shops: the store opens Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and extends into the evening Tuesday through Friday, while staying closed on Saturdays, the one day most other Main Street shops keep their longest hours. For visitors planning a downtown Madison outing on a weekend, that quirk is worth checking in advance, but on any of its open days, the shop remains a family-run fixture built from Polk’s original flea market table into a full storefront on Main Street, a business that grew out of a vision she held onto for years before it ever had a storefront to call its own.
