The Main Olive
About
A few doors down from Oxford’s other Main Street shops, The Main Olive occupies a storefront at 508 Main Street in the city’s historic downtown district, where it has built a reputation as a gourmet foods stop rather than a typical grocery store. The shop specializes in olive oils, vinegars and the kind of pantry staples that are hard to find on a regular supermarket shelf, and it invites customers to taste before they buy.
Inside, the shop carries roughly fifty varieties of natural and flavor-infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars, arranged alongside pastas, spices, jams, jellies, local honey, barbecue sauces and salsas. Many of the items on the shelves come from Alabama makers, artisans and crafters, mixed in with oils and vinegars sourced from producers overseas, so a single visit can turn up both a jar of local honey and a bottle of imported Tuscan olive oil sitting on the same shelf.

The store is currently owned by Adam Morris and Karen Grammer, who took over the business in the summer of 2019 from a childhood friend who had built the shop’s original concept. Both grew up near Oxford, Adam with an engineering background as the top student in his graduating class, and Karen with a longtime interest in culinary arts alongside a business and accounting education. Since taking over, the pair have kept the tasting-forward approach that defined the shop from the start, while gradually expanding the range of local products on the shelves.
Tastings are a central part of the experience. Customers are invited to sample the oils and vinegars before committing to a bottle, which the shop treats as a normal part of a visit rather than a special event reserved for holidays. Beyond the tasting counter, the store also stocks locally made art, kitchen accessories and gift baskets, making it a fairly reliable stop for anyone shopping for a hostess gift or a housewarming present rather than a routine weekly grocery run.

The Main Olive also functions as a small event space. The shop has hosted “Painting with Joy” sessions that pair a local artist’s instruction with an oil and vinegar tasting, and it rents out space for bridal showers, baby showers and direct sales gatherings that need a small, walkable downtown venue. On Saturday mornings, the business sets up a table at Market on Main, Oxford’s downtown farmers market, running from 8 a.m. until noon alongside other area vendors selling produce and crafts.
Regular store hours run Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the shop closed on Mondays and Sundays. The Main Street location puts it within an easy walk of several other independent shops in Oxford’s historic downtown, making it a natural stop for anyone spending an afternoon browsing the district on foot rather than driving between separate strip shopping centers.

For visitors unfamiliar with Oxford’s downtown, The Main Olive is a good introduction to what the district has become in recent years: a handful of small, specialty retailers occupying storefronts that once sat empty, each one built around a fairly narrow but well-executed idea. Here, that idea is good oil, good vinegar and the patience to let customers taste their way to a decision instead of guessing at a label, an approach that has kept regulars coming back since the shop first opened its doors on Main Street.
The shop’s location in Oxford also means it draws a mix of local regulars and visitors passing through on Main Street, many of whom stop in after seeing the store while walking between other downtown businesses. The name on the door, The Main Olive, reflects both its Main Street address and its focus on olive oil, and the combination has proven durable enough to survive a change in ownership without losing the character that first drew customers in.
