What is the best day trip from Huntsville?

For most people, the best single day trip from Huntsville is Decatur, because it packs a famous barbecue lunch, a first-rate family museum and a national wildlife refuge into a half-hour drive. If you want scenery more than food, Mentone and the Lookout Mountain area are the most beautiful, and Guntersville is the pick for a day on the water. Athens is the easiest short outing, with a walkable square you can cover in an afternoon.

What is there to do in Decatur?

Decatur sits on the Tennessee River about 30 minutes west of Huntsville, in Morgan County, and its historic downtown and Bank Street district have more going on than most visitors expect.

Eat at Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q at 1715 6th Avenue SE is where Alabama white sauce began. In 1925, L&N railroad worker Bob Gibson started smoking pork and chicken over hickory coals in brick pits behind his house, and the mayonnaise-and-vinegar sauce he dunked his chicken in became the signature of North Alabama barbecue. Order the smoked chicken with white sauce.

Spend the morning at the Cook Museum of Natural Science

The Cook Museum of Natural Science fills a 62,000-square-foot building at 133 4th Avenue NE downtown, a few blocks from the river. It grew from a small insect collection into one of North Alabama’s most distinctive family attractions, built for hands-on exploring. Plan on two to three hours with kids.

See Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1938, protects wintering habitat for thousands of ducks, geese and cranes, and endangered whooping cranes have wintered here since 2004. Its visitor center and wildlife observation building are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March through October; check the refuge’s site for winter hours. Starting in November 2026, a seasonal waterfowl sanctuary closes one road segment, though other hiking and biking routes stay open.

Walk downtown and Old Decatur

Downtown Decatur’s Second Avenue is anchored by the Princess Theatre, one of the few surviving Art Deco theaters in Alabama, with a neon marquee you can see from blocks away. For dinner, The RailYard runs a basement dining room with a farm-to-fork take on Southern comfort food, and Simp McGhee’s on Bank Street is the dressed-up choice, with Cajun-leaning seafood and beef. On the way home, stop at Tennessee Valley Pecan Company on Beltline Road for a bag of pecans. Our story on Decatur, Alabama goes deeper.

What is there to do in Athens, Alabama?

Athens is the Limestone County seat, about 30 minutes northwest of Huntsville, and its draw is a historic courthouse square ringed with shops, antiques stores and places to eat.

Catch the Fiddlers Convention

The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, hosted by Athens State University, runs September 30 through October 3, 2026, with more than 200 fiddlers expected and an arts and crafts show on the grounds. If you are reading this on publication day, there is still time to go. Otherwise, mark the first weekend of October on next year’s calendar.

Eat and shop around the square

  • BawBaw’s BBQ on South Madison Street is a counter-service barbecue spot with a short menu of smoked meats and scratch-made sides.
  • The Salty Cod on West Market Street is a British-inspired pub, butcher shop and dessert counter in one, with an imported fish-and-chip fryer.
  • Athens Alehouse on South Marion Street, open since 2021, has a self-serve tap wall for beer and wine, board games and live music on Friday and Saturday.

Our Athens, Alabama guide covers the town’s shops and history.

What is there to do in Guntersville?

Guntersville wraps around Lake Guntersville in Marshall County, about 45 minutes southeast of Huntsville, and the lake is the whole point.

Get on the water

Guntersville Boat Rentals at Spring Creek Marina rents pontoons, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards on what it describes as 75 miles of lake. As of this writing, pontoons rent for $449 per day and weekday jet ski rentals are $99 per hour; confirm current rates when you book.

Lake Guntersville State Park

Lake Guntersville State Park covers 6,000 acres along the Tennessee River with 36 miles of hiking and biking trails, a lodge, the Screaming Eagle Zipline, an 18-hole golf course and a seasonal beach. In January and February, the park holds Eagle Awareness programs on select weekends to celebrate the area’s wintering bald eagles.

Where to eat in Guntersville

Old Town Stock House on Old Town Street has served elevated Southern American cooking since 2015 and recommends reservations. Rock House Eatery on Gunter Avenue calls itself a Southern gourmet kitchen, with gumbo and po’boys alongside hand-cut burgers. Finish at Main Channel Brewing Company on Gunter Avenue, named for the lake’s main boating channel. Our Lake Guntersville and Northeast Alabama guide has more.

Is Mentone worth a day trip from Huntsville?

Yes, if you start early. Mentone is a tiny mountain town on top of Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County, with fewer than 500 year-round residents, and it sits next to some of the best scenery in Alabama. Because the drive is about an hour and a half each way, many people turn it into an overnight.

DeSoto Falls and DeSoto State Park

DeSoto State Park, about 8 miles northeast of Fort Payne, covers 3,502 acres with more than 35 miles of hiking trails, 11-plus miles of mountain biking trails and an accessible boardwalk. Its 104-foot DeSoto Falls is the headline. Trails and picnic areas are open dawn to dusk, and the park warns that GPS directions can be unreliable, so look up written directions before you lose signal.

Little River Canyon

Little River Canyon National Preserve, near Fort Payne, has a scenic rim drive on County Road 176 with overlooks into the canyon, plus hiking, kayaking and climbing. The Little River Canyon Center on Highway 35 is the place to start. Our story on DeSoto Falls and Little River Canyon covers both in detail.

Eat, shop and stay in Mentone

  • The Hatter Cafe serves breakfast and lunch in an Alice in Wonderland-themed building with chandeliers and teapots, plus weekend dinner.
  • Elevation Bistro on Highway 117 is the polished dinner choice, with a fireplace, craft cocktails and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Mentone Market has served as the town’s general store in one form or another for more than 80 years, with a deli, wood-fired pizza and local gifts.
  • Little River Art Gallery, run by the Little River Arts Council since 2006, shows member artists in the historic Moon Lake Campus building.

To stay over, Mentone Log Cabins and Cottages of Mentone are both in our directory, and our Mentone cabins weekend story has more.

How should you plan a day trip from Huntsville?

Pick one town per day, leave by 9 a.m., and time lunch for the town’s best restaurant. Here are three easy routes.

  1. River and barbecue (Decatur): Cook Museum at opening, lunch at Big Bob Gibson, Wheeler refuge in the afternoon, dinner on Bank Street.
  2. Lake day (Guntersville): Morning pontoon rental, lunch at Rock House Eatery, a hike in Lake Guntersville State Park, then a beer at Main Channel.
  3. Mountain loop (Mentone): Breakfast at The Hatter Cafe, DeSoto Falls mid-morning, Little River Canyon’s rim drive after lunch, dinner at Elevation Bistro.

Athens pairs well with Decatur on the same day: start on the Athens square in the morning and drive south to Decatur for a late barbecue lunch.

When is the best time for day trips from Huntsville?

October and early November are the best months: mountain foliage peaks in Mentone and around Little River Canyon, the lake is quiet after summer, and the weather is ideal for walking a town square. Spring is the next best, when waterfalls run strongest. Winter brings sandhill cranes to Wheeler and bald eagles to Lake Guntersville. Summer is for the lake. Start with our Huntsville guide for the city itself, and plan an evening back in town with our guide to Campus No. 805 and Huntsville’s breweries or an arts afternoon at Lowe Mill.
