Sallie
About
Sallie occupies a historic cottage in downtown Fairhope, Alabama, where chef and owner Sally Stringfellow serves seasonal Southern cooking sharpened by classic French technique. The restaurant is small by design, with limited seating and a single weekly dinner service, which keeps the kitchen focused on precision rather than volume.
Stringfellow brings more than twenty years of professional kitchen experience in Alabama to the space, including a run as Executive Chef at Jesse’s in Magnolia Springs. That background shows in a menu that leans on French method, reductions, beurre blancs, careful searing, without losing the Gulf Coast pantry that defines it.
Dinner service runs Thursdays only, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and reservations are worth making ahead given the intimate seating count. Outside of that regular seating, Stringfellow opens the cottage for private breakfast, lunch, and dinner bookings Friday through Monday, and keeps office hours Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for planning those events.

The regular menu changes with the season but has featured a pan-seared Gulf fish plated with asparagus and finished in a lemon beurre blanc, priced at $34. Braised short ribs arrive with a red wine reduction for $38, built for the kind of slow-cooked richness that pairs well with the restaurant’s wine list.
Vegetable-forward diners have an option in the herb-roasted stuffed pepper, filled with Gulf shrimp and creole rice for $28. For those who want the kitchen to lead, there is a Chef’s Signature Plate at $42, built around whatever seasonal, locally sourced ingredients are at their peak that week.

Sourcing centers on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, with the kitchen framing its approach as an effort to honor regional terroir through French technique rather than layering French cooking on top of it. That philosophy extends to the wine program, which partners with regional vintners and sommeliers and includes monthly wine pairing dinners built around the current menu.
Braised meats get similar attention to composition and sauce work, a style visible in dishes built around slow-cooked short rib and other cuts finished with reduction sauces rather than heavy seasoning. The plating throughout favors restraint, letting a handful of components carry the plate.

Beyond its weekly dinner service, Sallie functions as a private event space. Celebrations, including weddings, anniversaries, corporate gatherings, and holiday parties, can be booked starting at $95 per guest, with the same kitchen and cottage setting used for the regular Thursday service extended to private groups on other days of the week.
Stringfellow has described the goal of her cooking simply: food should make a diner feel good, during the meal and long after it. That sentiment fits the restaurant’s approach of small-batch, technique-driven Southern food served in a setting built for slowing down.
For reservations or private event inquiries, Sallie can be reached at 406 Pine Street in Fairhope, by phone at (251) 383-8990, or by email at sally@salliefairhope.com. Given the single dinner seating each week, advance booking is the surest way to get a table at the cottage.
The cottage setting itself is part of what distinguishes Sallie from a typical downtown storefront restaurant. Operating out of a historic residential-scale building rather than a converted commercial space gives the dinner service an intimate feel that matches the limited seating count, and it reinforces the sense that a visit here is closer to a planned occasion than a casual weeknight stop.
That intimacy extends to the private booking side of the business. Because Sallie only opens for public dinner service on Thursdays, the Friday through Monday private bookings function almost as a second identity for the restaurant, letting Stringfellow’s kitchen host breakfast, lunch, or dinner for private parties on days the cottage would otherwise sit closed to walk-in guests.
The monthly wine pairing dinners give repeat guests a reason to return on a set schedule, built around the current seasonal menu and matched with selections from the regional vintners and sommeliers the restaurant partners with. Combined with the private event minimum of $95 per guest for weddings, anniversaries, corporate events, and holiday gatherings, the wine dinners round out a calendar that runs well beyond the single weekly Thursday seating.
Office hours Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. exist specifically to handle the planning side of that private event calendar, giving prospective clients a window to reach the restaurant about weddings, corporate bookings, or holiday parties without competing with the Thursday dinner service itself.
