About

Overlooking Mobile Bay in historic Fairhope, Alabama, Emma’s Bay House traces its story back to 1958, when a young bride named Emma moved to town with her husband, Earl, and settled into a bayfront home that had, at the turn of the century, once operated as an inn. Emma had a vision of restoring the house to that earlier purpose, and in the meantime she built a reputation for hospitality around the neighborhood, serving afternoon coffee, tea, and cake to anyone who stopped by.

Emma’s daughter Betty went to work at the Grand Hotel down the road in Point Clear and eventually inherited the family home in 1978. Rather than let her mother’s dream fade, Betty took on a complete rebuild and renovation of the property, a project that led to the house finally reopening to guests as Emma’s Bay House in 2007. The four guest rooms are named for the women in that family line, Betty Annette, Kimberly Ann, Cindy Paige, and Dawn Marie, drawn from Betty and her daughters.

Betty Annette comes with one bed, a private bath, and balcony access, starting from $199 a night. Kimberly Ann pairs a queen bed with a private bath and its own veranda, also from $199. Cindy Paige is the largest of the four, with two queen beds, a private bath, a sitting area, and an executive workspace, starting from $239.

Dawn Marie sits on the lower level with a queen bed and a private bath, and it is the property’s wheelchair-accessible room, also from $199. Every room carries luxury linens, a private bathroom, satellite TV with premium channels, high-speed internet, a coffee pot, a hairdryer, remote-controlled air conditioning, a ceiling fan, and a seating area.

Breakfast changes daily and is made from scratch each morning, with dishes like French toast and bacon-wrapped shrimp joining the usual eggs, bacon, coffee, and orange juice. The kitchen accommodates allergies along with vegan and gluten-free requests, so groups with different dietary needs are not left picking around a single set menu. A spacious common area invites guests to settle in for football or board games, the porch doubles as a spot for on-site massage services, and a library and shared kitchen access round out the common spaces. An elevator runs at all hours, a detail that matters as much for the historic staircase as for guests who prefer not to use it.

Emma’s Bay House sits minutes from historic downtown Fairhope, close enough that guests can walk to shops and restaurants without giving up the quiet of a bayfront setting. The property has hosted weddings, business meetings, and family gatherings for years, and its combination of spectacular bay views and hands-on family history has drawn coverage from both Southern Living and Travel and Leisure. Reservations run through the property’s online booking system, and the family that has run the house since Betty’s renovation continues what Emma started decades ago, a tradition of hospitality passed down through four generations of the same Fairhope family.

Because lodging, rehearsals, ceremonies, and receptions can all happen on the same waterfront property, Emma’s Bay House also functions as a home base for weddings, letting a wedding party and its guests stay put instead of shuttling between a hotel and a separate venue. Couples planning a ceremony work directly with the property to put together a package suited to their group size, since packages are built around the event rather than sold off a fixed rate card. That same flexibility carries over to shopping weekends and business retreats, where a group can rent out multiple rooms and use the common areas as a shared home base for the length of the stay.
