What is the best ghost tour in Alabama?

For a classic evening ghost walk, the Haunted History of the Shoals Ghost Walk in Florence is the one we would plan a trip around. It has run for more than two decades, it is written and led by a local author, and it covers a compact, walkable historic downtown.

Haunted History of the Shoals Ghost Walk, Florence

The Haunted History of the Shoals Ghost Walk is written and led by Debra Glass, a longtime Florence author and guide. The flagship Downtown Florence Haunted History Ghost Walk meets at Wilson Park and spends about 90 minutes in the courtyards and side streets of the historic district around the courthouse square. Along the way, the tour stops at a reportedly haunted restaurant, the site of a Civil War-era hospital and the homes of notable former residents, and ends with the tale of what the tour bills as “the meanest man who ever lived in Florence.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 7 to 12, and children 6 and under go free. Most dates fall in October. Two other versions run on their own schedules: the Haunted History of UNA Ghost Walk meets at Harrison Fountain on the University of North Alabama campus, passes a Gothic Revival building that served as a Civil War hospital and ends with a reception and book signing in Rogers Hall, with proceeds going to an alumni scholarship fund. The Haunted History of Sheffield Ghost Talk moves the format across the river. See the Florence area guide for dinner before the walk.

Adela Haunted Tours, Dothan

Adela Haunted Tours is run by a team of self-described paranormal enthusiasts focused on the Wiregrass. Its Dothan Historical Walking Tour meets downtown at 192 South Foster Street on select Saturday evenings, usually from 5 to 7 p.m., and mixes general Dothan history with the ghost stories attached to specific storefronts, churches and civic buildings. It is a good first look at downtown Dothan’s architecture even if you are not sure about ghosts.

General admission is $25 per person, or $237 for a group of ten. For something darker, the company’s graveyard tours, usually from 7:40 to 10 p.m. and also $25, focus on local cemetery history and the stories behind individual graves. It also runs occasional special trips, including an investigation at the Bullock County Jail. Make a weekend of it with our Dothan area guide.

Mobile’s Original Ghost Tour, Mobile

Mobile’s Original Ghost Tour is a riding tour, not a walk, which suits a city whose most storied houses sit blocks or miles apart. It leaves from the Mobile Welcome Center at 111 South Royal Street and spends 90 minutes to two hours moving through several historic districts, with stops at antebellum homes and a historic graveyard. Guides lean into local legend rather than strict documented history, which is part of the fun.

Tours cost $20 per person and need at least six people to run. Hotel pickup is available for downtown Mobile guests. Bookings are non-refundable, so confirm your tour is running before you plan the rest of the evening. For more on the city’s spooky side, read our story on haunted Mobile and its ghost tours.

Is there a scary option for groups who don’t want a walking tour?

Yes. In downtown Huntsville, Huntsville Escape Rooms on Madison Street runs six themed rooms for players 8 and older, and several lean creepy. The Experiment sends players to escape a psychiatric hospital, The Psych Ward 2.0 has teams hunting a doctor’s hidden toxin, and The Executioner is set in a prison and torturer’s lair. Each room takes about an hour, starts from $39.99 per player and is booked privately, so you will not share a room with strangers. It is closed Mondays and open from 1:30 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and until 11:15 p.m. on Fridays. Pair it with dinner in Huntsville.

Are Alabama ghost tours good for kids?

Most are fine for older kids, and the Florence walk is the most family friendly. It prices children 7 to 12 separately and lets 6 and under in free. Mobile’s Original Ghost Tour is listed as kid friendly, and riding means little legs do not tire out. Dothan’s evening graveyard tours are better for teens and adults, and the Huntsville escape rooms are for ages 8 and up.

  • Under 7: Stick to an early Florence walk or the Mobile riding tour, and bring a flashlight to make it an adventure.
  • Ages 8 to 12: Any walking tour, plus the escape rooms with an adult.
  • Teens and adults: The Dothan graveyard tour or one of the darker escape rooms.

How do you choose the right ghost tour?

Choose by format, then by town. Walking tours put you on the actual streets where the stories happened, while riding tours cover more ground with less effort.

  • Best for history lovers: Florence, where a local author ties the stories to the real history of the Shoals.
  • Best value for a group: Dothan, with a $237 rate for ten people.
  • Best for limited mobility: Mobile’s riding tour.
  • Best on a rainy night: The Huntsville escape rooms, all indoors.

What should you know before you go?

Book ahead, dress for the weather and plan dinner around start times. October weekend tours fill, and several run only on select dates.

  1. Book early. The Florence walk runs mostly in October, Dothan’s tours run on select Saturdays, and Mobile’s tour needs six people to go.
  2. Check refund rules. Mobile’s tour bookings are non-refundable.
  3. Wear good shoes. Historic sidewalks and graveyards are uneven, especially in the dark.
  4. Bring a layer. Late October evenings in North Alabama can turn cool after sunset.
  5. Eat first. Most tours start around dinner time, and small-town kitchens can close early.
  6. Be respectful. Graveyards and churches on these routes are real places with real families. Stay on paths and keep voices down.

How can you make a spooky fall weekend of it?

Combine a ghost tour with daytime history and a fall event nearby.

  • Mobile: Spend the day at the Historic Oakleigh House Museum, an 1833 raised cottage in the Oakleigh Garden District ($12 adults), or the 1855 Bragg-Mitchell Mansion on Springhill Avenue ($12 adults), then take the ghost tour after dark. The Greater Gulf State Fair runs October 30 to November 8 at The Grounds.
  • Florence: Pair the walk with a drive on the Natchez Trace Parkway, which crosses the northwest corner of the state. Our Alabama fall foliage guide has the details.
  • Dothan: Come back in November for the National Peanut Festival, November 6 to 15. Our list of Alabama fall festivals for 2026 has every date.
