For a dolphin cruise in Orange Beach, book a 90-minute trip with Sunny Lady Dolphin Cruises from The Wharf or the glass-bottom catamaran at Dolphins Down Under near Perdido Pass; both run daily and suit all ages. For fishing, choose by trip length and target: a half-day inshore or nearshore trip for families and first-timers, or a full-day or overnight offshore charter for snapper and bigger Gulf fish, ideally on a private six-passenger boat out of Zeke’s Marina or Orange Beach Marina.

Orange Beach is one of the busiest charter fishing ports on the Gulf Coast, and Perdido Pass puts the open Gulf minutes from the docks. This guide compares the locally owned dolphin cruises and fishing charters in our directory and explains what to ask before you book. What is the best dolphin cruise in Orange Beach?

The best dolphin cruise for most families is a 90-minute trip from either Sunny Lady at The Wharf or Dolphins Down Under near Perdido Pass. Bottlenose dolphins live in the bays and passes year-round, so sightings are common in every season. Pick by departure point and boat style.

Sunny Lady Dolphin Cruises

Sunny Lady Dolphin Cruises leaves from The Wharf at 4673 Wharf Parkway West. It is family owned and traces its roots to 1965, when Olin Marler bought his first fishing boat. Cruises last about 90 minutes, and the boats have a snack bar, restrooms and an air-conditioned and heated cabin, which matters in July and January alike. It also runs sunset cruises. Leaving from The Wharf makes it easy to pair a cruise with dinner and the Ferris wheel.

Dolphins Down Under

Dolphins Down Under runs from 28101 Perdido Beach Boulevard on a glass-bottom catamaran. Its twin hulls give a steadier ride when the water is choppy, and the glass panels let kids watch the water below. The main offering is a daily 90-minute dolphin cruise, with sunset cruises and private charters available, and the company also rents beach gear.

Other ways to see dolphins

  • Good Buzz Charters is family owned by Rhett and Lindsay Grant and runs sunset cruises, dolphin-watching trips and half- and full-day outings from Legendary Marina in Gulf Shores, including island and sandbar hopping.
  • Sea View Tours runs clear-kayak tours of about an hour from Caribe Marina. Dolphins are never guaranteed, but paddling is the quietest way to be on the water.

How do you choose a fishing charter in Orange Beach?

Choose a fishing charter by four things: how long you want to be out, what you want to catch, how many people are going, and how well your group handles rough water. Then confirm what is included before you book.

  1. Trip length: Half-day trips usually stay inshore or nearshore. Full-day trips reach deeper reefs and bigger fish. Overnight and 24-hour trips head far offshore.
  2. Target fish: Inshore and back-bay trips target speckled trout, redfish and flounder. Nearshore trips target king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and cobia. Deep-sea trips target red snapper, vermilion snapper and triggerfish, among others.
  3. Group size: A six-pack charter carries up to six passengers and is private to your group. Larger groups need a bigger boat or two boats.
  4. Comfort: If anyone gets seasick, start with an inshore trip. Ask whether the boat has an air-conditioned cabin and a private restroom.

Do you need a fishing license on a charter?

No. Charter boat passengers in Alabama are covered by the boat’s license, so you do not need your own. You do need an Alabama saltwater license to fish from the surf, a pier or a private boat, though children under 16 are exempt. The Gulf State Park Pier requires a license in addition to its daily fishing fee. Outdoor Alabama has the current rules and saltwater size and creel limits.

What should you ask before you book?

  • What is included: license, bait, tackle, ice and fish cleaning?
  • Is the trip private or shared, and how many passengers can the boat take?
  • Is there a deposit or fuel surcharge?
  • Which species are in season on your dates? Seasons for fish like red snapper are set by state and federal regulators and change from year to year.
  • What happens if weather cancels the trip?
  • Is there shade, a cabin and a restroom on board?
  • Can you bring food and drinks, and what should you not bring?

Tips for your trip

  • Book early in summer. The best captains fill weekends and holiday weeks well in advance.
  • Prepare for seasickness. Eat a light breakfast and talk to your doctor or pharmacist about remedies before an offshore trip.
  • Wear non-marking shoes and bring layers. Early mornings on the water can be cool, and the sun reflects hard off the Gulf.
  • Plan for your catch. Bring a cooler for the ride home, and ask your captain where to get fish cleaned and packed.
  • Fishing on your own? J&M Tackle on Canal Road, family owned since 1988, has frozen bait, a custom rod shop and reel repair.

When is the best time for a dolphin cruise or fishing trip?

Dolphin cruises run year-round, and calm mornings or sunset trips usually offer the smoothest water. For fishing, what you can target and keep depends on the season and that year’s regulations, so ask your captain what is biting on your dates. Fall brings calmer crowds and good weather; our guide to Gulf Shores in October covers the season. If you are still deciding where to stay, our Gulf Shores vs. Orange Beach comparison explains why Orange Beach is the base for anglers, and things to do in Orange Beach fills in the rest of your trip.
