Pilcrow Cocktail Cellar
About
Pilcrow Cocktail Cellar is easy to miss from the sidewalk, which is more or less the point. The bar is hidden beneath Founders Station in downtown Birmingham, inside a cellar that dates back to 1881, when the building above it operated as a printing press company. The bar takes its name and its typographical mascot, the pilcrow symbol used to mark new paragraphs, directly from that history, and the space still carries the feel of a basement built for a very different purpose than serving cocktails.

The bar sits at 2015 1st Avenue North, Suite 1E, and it specializes in agave spirits, building most of its cocktail list around tequila and mezcal while still serving Southern hospitality rather than a stiff, overly serious bar experience. The drink menu runs long, with roughly twenty rotating cocktails priced mostly between nine and thirteen dollars. The Pilcrow, the bar’s namesake drink, mixes blanco tequila with sour orange, Amaro Montenegro, bergamot, and honey. The Black Walnut Old Fashioned swaps in Old Forester 100 proof bourbon with demerara, black walnut bitters, and an orange peel for a smokier, nuttier take on the classic. The Founder’s cocktail leans into the building’s history directly, combining blanco tequila, cognac, Ancho Reyes, lime, agave, orange bitters, and a tajin rim, while the Yoga Pants mixes vodka, Martini Fiero, raspberry, orgeat, and lime for a lighter, fruit forward option.

For guests who want to skip alcohol entirely, Pilcrow keeps a rotating seasonal mocktail on the menu alongside a house made non alcoholic option, and simpler options like a blanco tequila and Modelo pairing, a Jarritos Paloma, or a Ranch Water are available for anyone who wants something less involved than a full cocktail.

The cellar’s exposed brick walls and red neon lighting give the room an intimate, slightly clandestine feel that fits its underground location, and the low ceilings and close seating make it a better fit for smaller groups than a large night out. Pilcrow opens at 5 p.m. on Mondays, 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and stays open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with a later 6 p.m. start on Sundays. That schedule, combined with the late closing time on weekends, makes it a natural stop after dinner elsewhere downtown rather than an early evening destination.
Because the bar is genuinely below street level with limited signage, first time visitors should expect to look for the entrance near Founders Station rather than a storefront sign. That bit of searching is part of the appeal for regulars, who treat the bar as one of downtown Birmingham’s better kept secrets even as its reputation as one of the city’s most focused agave spirit bars continues to grow.
Founders Station, the building above Pilcrow’s cellar, sits in the heart of downtown Birmingham within walking distance of the Pizitz Food Hall, Railroad Park, and several other bars, which makes the cellar an easy add on to a longer evening downtown rather than a destination that requires a special trip on its own. Because the space is compact, larger groups may want to call ahead, though the bar does not operate on a strict reservation system for most nights.
The focus on agave spirits sets Pilcrow apart from most other cocktail bars in Birmingham, few of which build their entire program around tequila and mezcal specifically. That specialization gives the bar’s list a coherence that a broader, more general cocktail menu often lacks, and it makes Pilcrow a natural stop for visitors who already know they like tequila or mezcal and want to see how far a dedicated bar can take those spirits. Between the below ground setting, the 1881 building above it, and a drink list built entirely around one family of spirits, Pilcrow offers one of the more specific and memorable bar experiences in downtown Birmingham.
