About

The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame occupies the historic Carver Theatre on Fourth Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, within the Civil Rights District and the old Fourth Avenue Business District that once served as the commercial center of Black Birmingham. The organization works as a museum, a performance venue and an education center, all devoted to celebrating musicians with Alabama roots or connections who helped shape jazz. Its neighbors include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church, all within a few blocks.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1978 with a mission to encourage and cultivate a broad appreciation of jazz, and it opened its museum to the public in September 1993. The building that houses it has a long history of its own. The Carver opened in 1935 as a movie house where Black residents could see first run films during segregation, and it became a gathering place for the community along Fourth Avenue. After decades of decline, it closed in the early 1980s. The City of Birmingham purchased the property in 1990 and remodeled it as a live performance hall with a little over 500 seats, which became the Hall of Fame’s home.

Inside, the museum galleries display memorabilia connected to inductees, including instruments, paintings, quilts and personal belongings of well known performers. Honorees range across generations and styles, with names such as Nat King Cole, Lionel Hampton, Erskine Hawkins, Sun Ra, W.C. Handy and boogie woogie pioneer Clarence “Pinetop” Smith. Exhibits explore how these artists carried sounds from Alabama to stages across the country and the world, and how Birmingham’s own bands and teachers trained generations of players.

The theater itself remains an active stage. Following a recent renovation, the Carver hosts concerts, film screenings, festivals and community events that draw tens of thousands of visitors each year. Outside groups also use the hall, including the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, which has presented a concert series there. The building’s marquee on Fourth Avenue is a familiar landmark in the district, and the theater provides a setting where audiences can hear live jazz in the same neighborhood where many local musicians once performed.

Education is a core part of the organization. The Saturday Jazz Greats program has offered free instruction to young musicians since 1999, giving students a chance to study theory, improvisation and ensemble playing. A Student Jazz Band Festival brings school bands together for performances and adjudication, and the Jazz Recycle effort collects and redistributes instruments so more students can play. Workshops and master classes with visiting artists round out the calendar, along with an annual induction ceremony that adds new names to the Hall of Fame.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Tours can be reserved through the online booking page linked from the Hall of Fame’s website, and concert tickets are sold separately for individual events. Visitors often combine a stop at the Carver with time at the nearby Civil Rights Institute and a walk through Kelly Ingram Park. Questions about tours, events and group visits can be directed to the Hall of Fame by phone or email, and the events calendar on the website lists upcoming concerts, festivals and induction programs.
