About

The Birmingham Museum of Art sits in the cultural district of downtown Birmingham, facing Linn Park along Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard (the former 8th Avenue North). Its galleries cover art from ancient times to the present, drawn from cultures across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and beyond. Boutwell Auditorium sits nearby, and the museum’s central location makes it an easy stop for anyone exploring the city center on foot, whether for a quick look at one gallery or a full afternoon among the collections.

The institution grew out of the Birmingham Art Club, which formed in 1908 to promote the visual arts in a young industrial city. The museum itself was established in 1951 with a founding mission that welcomed all people, and its first public exhibition opened that spring in borrowed rooms at City Hall. Eight years later, in 1959, the collection moved into the Oscar Wells Memorial Building, designed by the Birmingham firm Warren, Knight and Davis. In 1993 the architect Edward Larrabee Barnes completed a major renovation and expansion that brought the facility to roughly 180,000 square feet on nearly four acres.

The permanent collection now numbers well over 25,000 objects. Strengths include one of the most significant holdings of Asian art in the region, with Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian and Southeast Asian works, and a large African collection with pieces dating from the twelfth century onward. Renaissance and Baroque paintings from the Kress Collection anchor the European galleries, and a deep collection of European decorative arts includes porcelain, silver and furniture. The museum also displays American painting and sculpture, Native American art and Pre-Columbian objects, along with contemporary work that rotates through special exhibitions.

Outside, a multilevel sculpture garden connects terraces, water features and lawns with works by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Jacques Lipchitz and Fernando Botero, along with commissioned pieces including a large Sol LeWitt wall work. Inside, Oscar’s Cafe serves lunch in a setting that overlooks the garden, and the building’s open lobbies and galleries are used for evening receptions and private events. For younger visitors, Bart’s ArtVenture offers a hands-on space where children can experiment with color, texture and pottery in an interactive setting.

Education is a central part of the museum’s work. Docents lead tours for school classes and adult groups, and staff can tailor topics to a group’s interests when arrangements are made a few weeks in advance. Access programs include verbal description tours with tactile models for visitors who are blind or have low vision, along with tours designed for guests with hearing impairments. Wheelchairs and assisted listening devices are available at the security desk, and Braille maps are provided. A regular calendar of lectures, family days, performances, festivals and art making sessions fills the building throughout the year.

General admission is free every day and covers the collection galleries and most exhibitions, though a few special exhibitions may be ticketed. The museum is open Tuesday from 1pm to 5pm, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Thursday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm, and it is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Parking is available in the museum’s own lot behind the building, reached from Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard, and additional parking is available in the nearby Boutwell Auditorium deck and at metered spaces on surrounding streets. A smartphone guide offers commentary on selected works in the galleries.
