About

The Mobile Museum of Art is the primary fine art museum for Mobile and the surrounding Gulf Coast region. It sits on Museum Drive inside Langan Park, the largest green space in the city, a large municipal park in west Mobile. The museum describes itself as the only accredited art museum in south Alabama, and it draws local families, school groups and travelers looking for a quiet afternoon away from downtown. Its location several miles west of the historic center gives it a different character from the city’s downtown museums, with ample room for galleries, studios and outdoor art.

The institution began in 1963 as the Mobile Art Gallery, a modest community effort to give the port city a permanent home for visual art. Its first facility in Langan Park covered about 14,000 square feet. Over the following decades the museum completed two major capital campaigns that expanded the building and its galleries, allowing it to grow from a small civic gallery into a full museum with professional staff, a research library and a substantial permanent collection.

That collection now numbers more than 6,400 objects. Holdings cover painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper and crafts, with American, European, African and Asian art all represented. Nineteenth century American landscapes and contemporary studio glass are among the areas the museum highlights. Alongside the permanent galleries, the museum mounts a steady schedule of temporary exhibitions that bring in regional, national and international artists. Recent shows have ranged from a survey tracing street art from Basquiat and Haring to Banksy and KAWS, to a visual memoir by artist Aminah Robinson, to an interactive exhibition of sculptures made from discarded materials aimed at younger visitors. A display of more than two dozen handmade hats by milliner Susie Mae Pugh-Williams shows the museum’s interest in craft traditions as well as fine art, and exhibitions typically remain on view for several months, so the galleries change noticeably over the course of a year.

The park setting is a large part of the experience. The museum maintains a sculpture trail on its grounds, so a visit can easily extend outdoors among the pines and oaks of Langan Park. Inside, the museum houses an art library and research center used by scholars and curious visitors alike, and it offers its spaces for private rentals such as receptions and meetings. The Art Store, the museum shop, carries gifts and art related items and also sells online, so visitors can browse its selection before or after a trip to Langan Park.

Education is central to the museum’s work. Its Museum School runs school tours, hands on art classes and workshops for children, teens and adults, with recent offerings including watercolor, drawing, toddler sessions and mural making for teens. The museum also takes art beyond its own walls through community partnerships, including work with the Salvation Army’s Family Haven, and a pop up museum installation in downtown Mobile that brings rotating art closer to the city center. Sensory kits are available for visitors who benefit from additional support while touring the galleries.

The Mobile Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and is closed on Sundays, Mondays, city holidays and during members only events. General admission is charged for adults, with discounted rates for seniors, students and active or retired military. Children under 6 enter free, and residents of Mobile County receive free admission every Thursday. Members of reciprocal programs such as NARM and SEMC are also admitted at no charge. Current exhibition dates and class schedules are posted on the museum’s website.
