Cult Hair Collective
About
In historic downtown Florence, on East Tuscaloosa Street, Cult Hair Collective operates as a small, independently run studio rather than a large-format salon. The salon describes itself as gender-neutral and fully inclusive, stating plainly that it does not discriminate or tolerate prejudice of any kind, and it keeps its client list personal, working out of a compact storefront that leans into the character of the surrounding downtown block rather than trying to look like a chain salon.

The studio’s services span clipper and scissor cuts, fringe and beard trims, vivid and traditional hair coloring, blowouts, and thermal styling, along with manicures and pedicures handled by a dedicated nail stylist. That combination lets clients handle both a haircut and a nail appointment in the same visit without needing to book two separate businesses.
Owner and stylist Laura Ash founded Cult Hair Collective after a career path that started far from a salon chair. She grew up in Connecticut and lived throughout the Northeast, earned a master’s degree in English Education, and spent time teaching middle school English and coaching girls’ soccer before shifting into hairstyling full time. Ash went on to spend 13 years with Paul Mitchell, working as both a stylist and an instructor, before opening her own studio in Florence and building it around curly hair and shag cuts as a specialty. Outside the salon, she lists taxidermy, equestrian pursuits, and bone collecting among her interests, and describes the studio in her own words as “a very personal reflection” of who she is.

Stylist Annie Hendricks, who goes by @thechair_culthair on Instagram and uses they/any pronouns, handles the studio’s nail services along with hair, color, makeup, and skincare work. Hendricks trained at the Aveda Institute in Birmingham and has close to a decade of experience across those disciplines. A Florence native who also spent time living in Texas, Hendricks has said the favorite part of the job is helping build the confidence clients walk out of the chair with. Together, Ash and Hendricks bring more than 25 years of combined experience to the studio, and each manages an individual booking calendar through GlossGenius, so clients typically book directly with the specific team member they want to see rather than through a single centralized front desk. Prospective clients can also follow the studio’s work on Instagram at @culthair, where both stylists post finished cuts, color work, and nail sets between appointments.

The salon’s approach to communication is notably casual for a service business: rather than listing a general phone line for calls, Cult Hair Collective directs clients to text for scheduling questions, a detail that fits the studio’s laid-back, personal-relationship style of doing business. It is the kind of setup that tends to appeal to clients who want a consistent stylist relationship over time rather than whoever happens to be available that day. The studio also describes its pricing philosophy as one built around empowering clients through education, with services determined by each client’s lifestyle, needs, and budget rather than a rigid fixed menu.
Being situated in historic downtown Florence also puts the studio within easy reach of the shops, restaurants, and university foot traffic that define that stretch of the city, making it a convenient stop for both longtime Florence residents and University of North Alabama students looking for a stylist who isn’t tied to a franchise. Between Laura Ash’s 13 years of Paul Mitchell training and her specialization in curly hair and shag cuts, Annie Hendricks’ nearly decade-long Aveda Institute background and nail expertise, and a location right in the middle of downtown Florence’s historic core, Cult Hair Collective has positioned itself as a distinctly independent alternative to the area’s larger salon chains.
