Carpe Diem Coffee & Tea Co.
About
Carpe Diem Coffee & Tea Co. has been pouring coffee out of a converted Victorian house on Old Shell Road in Mobile for nearly two decades, and the setting is still one of the main reasons people come back. Sitting almost directly across from the main entrance to Spring Hill College, the shop draws a steady mix of students, professors, and neighborhood regulars who treat the wraparound porch and creaky wood floors as an extension of their own living room.

The house itself does a lot of the storytelling. Small rooms with mismatched furniture branch off from the main counter, giving visitors a choice between a quiet corner for studying and a busier front room for catching up with friends. It is an unusual amount of square footage for a coffee shop, and the layout means Carpe Diem rarely feels as packed as a single-room cafe would during the morning rush, even with Spring Hill classes letting out nearby.
Coffee is roasted and blended specifically with Mobile in mind. The shop’s own Bienville Blend was named for the city’s founder and built, in the owners’ words, to give people a reason to get out of bed each morning. It sits alongside an Espresso Julian blend made from beans sourced across six countries and a Southern Pecan flavor that regulars consistently order as the shop’s most popular bag to take home.

Beyond espresso, cappuccino, and a full hot tea list, the food menu leans into breakfast and lunch rather than treating it as an afterthought. Bagels, croissants, and biscuits come loaded with ham, bacon, or sausage, egg, and cheese, and the lunch side covers a chicken salad sandwich, a BLT, and a hot turkey and Swiss, all served on a choice of bagel, croissant, or wheat bread with chips and a pickle. A dessert case rounds things out with cheesecake, key lime pie, red velvet cake, and scoops of Old Dutch Mexican vanilla ice cream for an affogato.
Hours run long by coffee shop standards, opening at 6 a.m. on weekdays and staying open until 10 p.m. every night of the week, which makes Carpe Diem as useful for an evening study session or a late conversation as it is for a first cup before work. That flexibility, paired with online ordering for both drinks and whole bags of beans, has helped the shop build a following well outside the immediate Spring Hill neighborhood.
The house’s history is part of what locals bring up when describing the place to newcomers. Long before it held an espresso machine, the building was simply a home in one of Mobile’s older residential pockets, and the current owners have kept enough of that character intact that regulars still refer to certain rooms by their original purpose. It gives the shop a lived-in feel that a purpose-built cafe would have a hard time replicating.

Catering has become a meaningful part of the business as well, with the shop supplying coffee service and pastries for meetings and events around Mobile. It is a natural extension of a menu already built around trays of muffins, scones, and granola, and it means the same blends served on the porch each morning show up at offices and gatherings across the city.
Carpe Diem also keeps a hand in the coffee community beyond its own counter, having been recognized through groups like the Specialty Coffee Association and maintaining ties to Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce activities over the years. For a shop that has stayed independently owned since it opened, that kind of steady presence matters. Visitors looking for a chain-store pace should look elsewhere. Carpe Diem is built for lingering, whether that means a laptop and a quiet room upstairs or a rocking chair on the porch with a cup of Southern Pecan and nowhere in particular to be.
