Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe, Mobile
About
Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe has been part of the Mobile dessert scene since Edwin Widemire opened the original shop in 1969, using ice cream recipes handed down from his own father. Cammie Wayne bought the business in 1998 after working there since she was sixteen years old, and that continuity, an employee who eventually became the owner, has kept the shop’s original character intact even as it has grown.

The biggest shift in the shop’s history came in 2011, when Cammie and her husband Larry began making all of their ice cream on site at a dedicated creamery on Halls Mill Road. That move made Cammie’s the only ice cream manufacturer and wholesaler based in Mobile, a distinction that separates it from most local scoop shops, which typically buy their product from an outside supplier. Today the creamery turns out forty-seven flavors, giving the shop a rotation deep enough that regulars can visit repeatedly without running out of new options.

Cammie’s now operates across three locations along the central Gulf Coast: the original Old Shell Road shoppe in Mobile, the Halls Mill Road creamery where the ice cream is actually produced, and a newer location in Fairhope across the bay. Each keeps its own hours, and the Old Shell Road shoppe runs the longest schedule of the three, open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, closed only on Mondays.
The Old Dutch name and recipes reach back more than five decades at this point, and the shop has resisted the pull toward novelty flavors and gimmicky presentations that some newer ice cream shops chase. Instead, the emphasis stays on traditional, well made scoops, the kind of place where a hand-dipped cone or a banana split feels like the right order rather than an afterthought next to a menu of elaborate sundaes.

Being a manufacturer as well as a retailer has also opened up a wholesale side of the business, with Cammie’s ice cream showing up at other restaurants and shops around the region rather than staying confined to its own storefronts. That wholesale reach has quietly extended the shop’s influence across Mobile’s dessert scene beyond the three retail locations most customers actually visit.
For longtime Mobile residents, Cammie’s carries a certain nostalgia that a newer shop simply cannot replicate. Multiple generations of the same families have grown up stopping in after Little League games or Sunday drives, and the shop’s continued family ownership, now spanning more than one owner but never leaving local hands, has helped it hold onto that generational loyalty. It is the kind of business where longtime customers will happily explain the difference between the original shop and the newer locations, and where a new resident asking for a Mobile ice cream recommendation is almost guaranteed to hear Cammie’s name first.
Between the deep flavor rotation, the on-site creamery, and more than fifty years of history under two family owners, Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe has earned its place as one of Mobile’s most established independent dessert spots. It remains a straightforward, unpretentious ice cream parlor in the best sense, built on a strong product rather than a trend.
The shop’s commitment to on-site production also means seasonal and limited flavors show up on the board throughout the year, giving even the most frequent visitors a reason to keep checking back rather than settling permanently on one favorite. That rotation, paired with the standard lineup of classics, keeps the forty-seven flavor board feeling current instead of static.
For a city with no shortage of dessert options, Cammie’s has managed to hold onto a kind of loyalty that only comes from decades of consistency. Families who grew up stopping in after school now bring their own children through the same doors, and the shop’s continued presence on Old Shell Road has made it something of a fixed point on the map for longtime Mobile residents, a place that has simply always been there when a scoop of something familiar was needed.
