About

Huntsville has no shortage of breweries, but Yellowhammer Brewing was the one that helped start the city’s craft beer momentum back in 2010. Four founders opened the operation with a simple aim: bring quality, tradition minded beer to a part of Alabama that did not have much of it yet. Today the brewery is one of the anchor businesses inside Campus 805, the entertainment district on Clinton Avenue West, where its taproom pours more than twenty beers to a steady mix of neighbors, engineers on a lunch break, and visitors working their way down the Downtown Huntsville Craft Beer Trail.

The brewing philosophy at Yellowhammer leans on Belgian and German tradition filtered through a Southern lens. That shows up across a lineup organized into hoppy, light, amber, dark, and sour categories. Cheatin’ Heart and Groovy Don’s IPA headline the hoppy side of the board, Belgian White and Yellowhammer Gold cover lighter, more sessionable styles, Rebellion Red Lager and Oktoberfest Lager fill out the amber lineup, and Darkhammer, a Belgian style quad, anchors the dark beers alongside seasonal releases like Nussknacker Winter Bock. A rotating sours and seltzers list, including Sunliner Gose and Acid Beach Sour Ale, rounds out a tap wall built for regulars who like to work their way through the whole menu over repeat visits.

Since relocating to Campus 805 in 2015, Yellowhammer has grown well past a standard taproom. The brewery added a private event space called the Bierhall, a separate lounge, and eventually a distillery, so the building now produces both beer and spirits under one roof. Earth and Stone Pizza operates inside the same space, giving visitors a reason to settle in for a full meal rather than a quick pint. The combination of production brewery, distillery, wood fired pizzeria, and event hall makes the Campus 805 location feel like a small campus of its own, which is fitting given the name of the surrounding development.

Visitors who want to see the beer actually being made can look from the taproom into the working brewhouse, a detail that longtime regulars point to as part of what keeps Yellowhammer feeling like a production brewery first and a bar second. The Bierhall and Lounge spaces get booked for private parties, rehearsal dinners, and company gatherings, and staff can walk a group through a flight built from the brewery’s five beer categories as an easy way to land on a favorite before committing to a full pint.

Because Yellowhammer sits inside Campus 805, parking is shared with the rest of the development, and the taproom draws crowds before events at Straight to Ale next door or after a show at one of the district’s music venues. That shared footprint means visitors can treat an afternoon at Yellowhammer as one stop on a longer walk through the district rather than a single destination. The taproom stays casual and family friendly during the day, then picks up energy in the evenings as the surrounding campus fills in with people moving between the brewery, the distillery counter, and the pizzeria tables.

Hours run seven days a week, with the taproom opening at 11 a.m. daily and staying open later on Friday and Saturday nights, closing earlier on Sundays. Anyone new to Huntsville’s beer scene could do worse than starting here. Yellowhammer’s role in establishing the city’s brewing reputation means most other local breweries, including several within walking distance, trace some part of their story back to the same wave of Alabama craft beer that Yellowhammer helped kick off in 2010. For a first stop on the Craft Beer Trail or a relaxed evening with a pizza and a flight, the Clinton Avenue taproom remains one of the most complete brewery visits in the city.
