About

Cotton Row Restaurant occupies a storefront directly on Huntsville’s historic Southside Square downtown, and has served fine American cuisine with strong Southern influences since chef James Boyce opened it in 2008. Boyce built his career over four decades in professional kitchens, studying at the Culinary Institute of America before spending six years at Le Cirque in New York under Daniel Boulud, and he later earned Mobil Five-Star recognition for his work at the restaurant Studio, before he and his wife, Suzan, settled in Huntsville and founded Boyce Restaurant Concepts.

Cotton Row was the couple’s first Huntsville restaurant, opened the same year as its sister concept Pane e Vino Pizzeria, and it remains the flagship of a small local group that has since grown to include Commerce Kitchen, which opened in December 2010, and Grille on Main, which followed in February 2021, all still based in Huntsville rather than expanded into a regional or national chain. The downtown square location puts the restaurant within a short walk of the county courthouse and the rest of Huntsville’s historic downtown business district, and the kitchen builds its seasonally driven menu around classical French technique layered onto local seafood, vegetables, and meats.

The dinner menu is built around Gulf-forward seafood and elevated Southern staples. Starters include a Coastal Seafood Chowder with clams, shrimp, fish, and applewood bacon, a Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with sweet corn, herb salad, and a lemon aioli, and Cornmeal Crusted Apalachicola Oysters with a tomato-horseradish remoulade. A Gulf Shrimp Aguachile Verde and a Wagyu Carpaccio show the kitchen’s range beyond straightforward Southern comfort food, while Southern Fried Green Tomatoes and a Chef’s Charcuterie Board keep a foot in more familiar territory.

Entrees push toward the higher end of Huntsville’s dining scene, with a Day Boat Gulf Flounder and Rock Shrimp served with new potatoes, field peas, and a basil beurre blanc, a Golden Crusted Pan Seared Redfish, and Herb Crusted Colorado Lamb Chops finished with smoked eggplant puree, preserved lemon, roasted heirloom tomatoes, mint pistou, and lamb jus, all priced between roughly forty and forty-five dollars. Braised Black Angus Beef Short Ribs and a Grilled Certified Black Angus Beef entree round out the meatier options, while a lighter JB’s Wagyu Reserve Burger, dressed with aged gruyere, roasted wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, crispy prosciutto, and truffle aioli, gives the menu a more casual entry point at twenty-eight dollars. Desserts include a Sticky Toffee and Bourbon Bread Pudding and a Tahitian Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee, and the restaurant’s own site describes its wine list as award-winning, backed by an on-site wine cellar, private dining spaces, and an outdoor dining option for guests who prefer to eat on the square rather than inside.

Cotton Row is located at 100 South Side Square in downtown Huntsville and can be reached at 256-382-9500. Dinner service runs Tuesday through Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Reservations can be booked through Resy, a useful step given the restaurant’s downtown square location and reputation as one of Huntsville’s more established fine dining rooms, and the restaurant also caters weddings, corporate events, and other special celebrations, drawing on its private dining spaces for parties that want a room of their own. Visitors headed downtown for dinner should plan for street parking or a nearby public lot, since the historic square does not offer a dedicated restaurant lot, and arriving a few minutes early lets guests take in the square itself before being seated. For anyone looking for a special-occasion dinner in Huntsville built on genuine fine dining credentials rather than a chain steakhouse, Cotton Row remains one of the city’s clearest options.
