About

S&V Down Home Cooking has been feeding North Memorial Parkway in Huntsville since the late 1990s, starting life as a catering operation before growing into a full sit down restaurant. The business is run by Songia Moore-Lawrence, who grew up in Madison, Alabama, and her husband Greg Lawrence, who is originally from Eufaula. According to the restaurant’s own account, the idea for a full restaurant grew directly out of family cooking, particularly a grandmother’s hot water cornbread and homemade desserts, recipes that convinced the family there was a market for the kind of scratch cooked plates most people only get at a relative’s kitchen table.

The restaurant occupies a storefront suite at 1407 North Memorial Parkway, a stretch of Huntsville that is more commercial corridor than dining destination, which makes S&V something of a neighborhood secret for people who know to look for it. Inside, the menu reads like a rotating list of Southern standards built around a protein, a starch, and whatever vegetables are on the stove that day, the kind of format that regulars learn to check on rather than expect to be identical from visit to visit.

Daily specials, offered Friday and Saturday, form the backbone of the menu. Chicken and dressing, fried chicken, fried fish by the piece, and a stuffed pork chop are the standing options, and each can be built into a combo plate that pairs two proteins, such as a fish, pork chop, and chicken combination or a chicken and pork chop plate. Sandwiches round out the rest of the menu for guests who want something lighter or faster, including a fried bologna sandwich, a pork chop sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich, and a fried fish sandwich, most served with the option to add a combo of fries and a drink.

Vegetable sides rotate daily and typically include cabbage, collard greens, corn casserole, fried okra, green beans, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pinto beans, potato salad, and candied yams, priced individually so guests can build their own plate rather than commit to a fixed combination. Fried green tomatoes and sweet potato fries are offered as extras, and a standalone veggie plate is available for guests who want to skip meat entirely. Desserts are simple and homemade in the same spirit as the rest of the menu, and the restaurant also bottles and sells its own seasoning blend by the jar for customers who want to bring a bit of the kitchen home.

S&V also runs a catering arm, which was in fact the original business before the restaurant opened, and the two sides of the operation still lean on each other. Church groups, family reunions, and office lunches around Huntsville have relied on S&V for trays of the same chicken and dressing and fried fish served in the restaurant, scaled up for a crowd. That catering pedigree shows in the confidence of the cooking: nothing on the menu reads like an experiment, and everything is built around dishes the family has been making for decades.

For anyone new to Huntsville looking for a plate of Southern cooking that has not been dressed up for a wider audience, S&V Down Home Cooking is worth tracking down on North Memorial Parkway. It is a family run operation, not a concept restaurant, and the menu reflects the priorities of a family that has been cooking together for close to three decades. Portions run generous, most plates stay in the single digit and low double digit price range, and service leans friendly and quick rather than formal.

Huntsville has plenty of Southern cooking available, but a lot of it comes filtered through a chain restaurant or a fast casual counter. S&V is neither of those things. It survives on repeat customers who know which day the chicken and dressing runs and plan lunch around it, and it is a good reminder that some of the city’s most convincing home style cooking still comes out of a strip mall storefront rather than a downtown restaurant row.
