The best things to do on Dauphin Island, Alabama, are walking its quiet Gulf beaches, birding during spring and fall migration, exploring Fort Gaines, and getting on the water with a fishing charter, dolphin cruise or pontoon rental. It is an easy day trip from Mobile, and staying a night lets you catch a sunset over the Mississippi Sound and an early morning on the beach.

This guide covers how to get there, what to do, the best charters and tours, where to eat and stay, and when to go. Linked businesses are locally owned and listed in our directory; browse our Dauphin Island area guide for the full list, and see our Mobile Bay guide for Mobile and Fairhope.

How do you get to Dauphin Island?

Drive south from Mobile on State Route 193, which crosses the Dauphin Island Bridge onto the island; plan on 45 minutes to an hour depending on where you start. From Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, the scenic route is the Mobile Bay Ferry, which crosses between Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island in about 40 minutes. At least one ferry runs year-round, and evening departures (6:30 p.m. from Dauphin Island and 7:15 p.m. from Fort Morgan) only run during Daylight Saving Time, so check the schedule before you count on a late crossing. Our Gulf Shores and Orange Beach guide covers the other side of the bay.

What are the best things to do on Dauphin Island?

The best things to do on Dauphin Island are Fort Gaines, the beaches, birding and time on the water. You can see most of it in a day and all of it in a weekend.

Fort Gaines

Fort Gaines guards the east end of the island, where it faces Fort Morgan across the mouth of Mobile Bay. The brick fort played a role in the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, and today you can walk its walls, tunnels and bastions and look out over the water the ferry crosses. It is the best history stop on the island and a natural pairing with the ferry. Check current hours and admission before you go.

The beaches

Dauphin Island’s beaches are quieter and less developed than Gulf Shores, which is the whole appeal. The public beach near the middle of the island is the easiest to reach, and the west end stretches for miles of open sand where you can walk a long way without seeing many people. Bring what you need, because shade and services are limited, and stay off the dunes.

Birding

Dauphin Island is one of the best birding spots on the Gulf Coast because it is the first land many migrating songbirds reach after crossing the Gulf in spring, and a last stop before they head south in fall. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary on the east end has trails through maritime forest, a freshwater lake and dunes. October is a good month to visit for fall migrants. Our winter birding on Dauphin Island story covers the cooler months.

Getting around by e-bike

Dauphin Island Ebikes rents electric bikes as a delivery-only service: no storefront, just drop-off and pickup anywhere on the island. Rentals include a helmet, a lock and roadside assistance, and the RadRunner bikes have a rear cargo area for a beach bag. On an island built along one main road, it is the most fun way to get from the fort to the west end.

Mini golf and shopping

Island Golf at 1000 DeSoto Drive is a family-owned, 18-hole mini golf course, good for an evening when the sun is too strong for the beach. For souvenirs, The Silver Pearl Gifts and Art near the public beach sells original work by island artist Marie Tafra-Sisk, and The Hippie Fish on Bienville Boulevard carries women’s boutique clothing, swimwear and island-themed apparel.

What are the best Dauphin Island fishing charters and boat tours?

Most Dauphin Island charters and tours leave from Dauphin Island Marina on Lemoyne Drive, at the island’s east end. Here is how the main operators compare. Browse Dauphin Island tours and experiences for more.

Operator What they do Good to know
Dauphin Island Marina Sunset cruises, lighthouse and dolphin tours, bay and inshore charters, pontoon rentals Bait and tackle shop on site; pontoons by the half day, full day or multi-day
Captain Mike’s Fishing Red snapper, bluewater, tuna and inshore trips Family run since the early 1970s; trips from 6 hours to multi-day
Captain T’s Fishing & Outdoor Adventures Nearshore and offshore charters, plus dolphin, sunset and lighthouse cruises Offshore tuna trips up to 24 hours
Gray Gulf Charters Inshore and nearshore saltwater fishing One boat, one captain with 45-plus years on lower Mobile Bay; up to 5 anglers; rates include license, tackle, fuel and fish cleaning
D.I. Reef Monster Inshore, nearshore and offshore charters; trips to Petit Bois Island A 31-foot boat for up to 6 passengers
Captain Ron’s Watersports & Lodging Jet ski and pontoon rentals, guided island cruises for up to 6 Waterfront rental units on site

For first-timers with kids, a sunset or dolphin cruise is the easiest win. Serious anglers should book offshore red snapper trips well ahead and ask each captain about current season dates and whether fishing licenses are included.

Where should you eat on Dauphin Island?

Dining on Dauphin Island is casual and limited, so plan meals around a few reliable spots and pack snacks for the beach.

  • Pirate’s Bar & Grill at 918 Bienville Boulevard fills a round mid-century building that was once the clubhouse of the Isle Dauphine Club, with an outdoor deck, beach access, pool access and live music.
  • The Carriage Wine & Market at 1522 Bienville Boulevard is a wine bar, bistro and specialty market with a covered patio that looks toward the Gulf and the Sound. Its sister shop is in Florence, in North Alabama.

Where should you stay on Dauphin Island?

Winter is quiet and good for birders and walkers, though some businesses keep shorter hours. Hurricane season runs June through November, so watch the forecast and check that the bridge and ferry are running before you go.
