About

Bama Bed and Breakfast occupies an antebellum home built in 1823, standing just two blocks from Bryant Denny Stadium in the heart of Tuscaloosa. The property is owned and operated by Marc and Kim Roberts, both retired teachers with a combined 28 years in education before they turned their attention to hospitality full time. Their five adult children now help run the business alongside them, handling everything from bookkeeping and marketing to office management and day to day hospitality, making this a genuinely family run operation rather than a managed hotel property.

The main house holds seven historic guest suites, each named for a different chapter of the home’s or the city’s history: the Capstone Suite, the Tusk Suite, the Crimson Suite, the Chimes Suite, the Sweet Home Alabama Suite, the Magnolia Family Suite, and the Wisteria Suite. Every suite comes with a private room and private bathroom, a detail the innkeepers highlight since many bed and breakfasts still ask guests to share facilities. The rooms blend the character of a nearly two century old structure, including original architectural details, with the comforts modern travelers expect, such as updated bathrooms and climate control.

Breakfast is a genuine centerpiece of a stay here rather than an afterthought. Weekday mornings bring a standard hot breakfast with meats and fresh fruit, while weekends step up to a heartier, more indulgent spread. Guests who need to leave early can request a bagged breakfast instead. Signature dishes include Nanny Lanier’s biscuits served with cocoa syrup, Kim’s Famous Cinnamon Rolls, sausage gravy and biscuits, and seasonal blueberry pancakes made with berries pulled from the property’s own garden. A continental spread of bagels, muffins, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, cream cheese, farm fresh jams, and cheese rounds things out, alongside coffee, orange juice, milk, and hot tea.

The Roberts family’s story adds real depth to the property’s history. On December 16, 2000, their home took a direct hit from an F4 tornado while the family sheltered together in a closet. Four years after rebuilding, a house fire destroyed the home again in 2006. Rather than walking away, the family rebuilt a second time and eventually opened their doors to overnight guests, turning a home that had survived disaster twice into a welcoming inn. Over the years the Roberts also became foster parents to 25 children, adopted three of them, and raised two biological children of their own, a history that shows up in the warmth and personal attention repeat guests often mention.

Beyond the seven suites in the main house, the Roberts operate Bama Vacation Rentals, a property management arm of the same family business that oversees dozens of additional short term rental homes scattered around Tuscaloosa, from properties within walking distance of the stadium to lakefront houses and downtown condos. The company markets itself as the area’s dedicated game day lodging manager, coordinating cleaning, maintenance, and guest communication for property owners while giving visitors a wider menu of stay options under one locally run umbrella. Guests can book any of these rentals, along with the historic suites, directly through the Bama Bed and Breakfast website rather than through a third party platform.

The office is staffed Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, and the innkeepers coordinate check in details directly with guests for arrivals outside those hours, which is typical for a small owner run inn rather than a staffed hotel lobby. The location, two blocks from Bryant Denny Stadium, makes it a natural home base for football weekends, but the historic charm and personal service draw visitors throughout the year for weddings, family reunions, and University of Alabama campus visits alike.
