About

Wagner’s RunWalk has been Tuscaloosa’s headquarters for running and walking gear since 1953, when founder Bill Wagner relocated from Paris, Tennessee and acquired an existing shoe store in downtown Tuscaloosa. Wagner came from a family with deep roots in the footwear industry, and he built the new shop around a simple founding philosophy: sell quality products and give great customer service. More than seventy years later, that same principle still guides how the family owned business operates on Queen City Avenue.

What sets Wagner’s apart from a typical shoe retailer is its emphasis on fit science. The store uses professional foot analysis and a 3D scanner capable of producing a full model of a customer’s feet, technology aimed at helping runners and walkers find shoes that actually match their individual gait and foot shape rather than guessing based on size alone. Staff are trained in biomechanics and shoe fitting, and while appointments are available for customers who want dedicated one-on-one time, they are not required, so a walk-in shopper can get the same expert attention as someone who scheduled ahead.

The shop carries footwear and apparel from established performance brands including ON, HOKA, and Brooks, giving serious runners access to the same technical gear they would find at specialty stores in much larger cities, but delivered with the kind of personal attention only a small, independent retailer can offer. Wagner’s has also built its identity around community, running the philosophy that running and walking are more fun with friends. The store partners with local groups including the Tuscaloosa Track Club and Tuscaloosa Triathletes, and it regularly hosts group runs and other events that turn shoe shopping into part of a larger, ongoing relationship with the local running and walking community rather than a single transaction.

Wagner’s RunWalk is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., hours built around the rhythms of both weekday runners and weekend athletes. The business, which also has ties to the related Wagner’s Shoes For Kids and Wagner’s Team Sports, remains firmly a family operation more than seven decades after Bill Wagner first opened its doors, and that continuity has made it one of the most trusted names in Tuscaloosa for anyone serious about getting the right pair of shoes for the miles ahead.

The investment in fitting technology, including the 3D foot scanner, sets Wagner’s apart from generic athletic shoe retailers that stock the same models regardless of a customer’s specific gait or foot shape. A poor shoe fit is one of the most common causes of injury for new runners, and Wagner’s built its entire approach around solving that problem before it starts rather than after a customer has already developed a nagging pain that keeps them off the road or trail. That level of technical service is rarely available outside of dedicated running specialty stores, and it is part of why serious local runners keep coming back even when a big box store down the street might sell a similar shoe for a slightly lower price.

Community involvement has been just as central to Wagner’s identity as its technical fitting services. By partnering with groups like the Tuscaloosa Track Club and Tuscaloosa Triathletes and hosting group runs, the store has positioned itself as more than a retail transaction point, functioning instead as a hub for the city’s broader running and walking culture. For newcomers to the sport looking for both the right gear and a welcoming community to train with, and for veteran racers who have been buying their shoes at the same Queen City Avenue storefront for years, Wagner’s RunWalk continues to serve as Tuscaloosa’s most established resource for anyone who moves through the city on foot.
