The Surcie Shoppe
About
The Surcie Shoppe takes its name from an old Southern word for a small, unexpected gift given just because, and the storefront on South 9th Street in downtown Opelika is built entirely around that idea. Founder Mae-Ann Webb opened the boutique in 2022, bringing a degree in retail and fashion merchandising and years of experience working various retail positions to a shop built around three things she has said motivated her from the start: a passion for fashion, her community, and supporting local businesses. Webb describes the goal as providing a welcoming and friendly environment and a bubbly shopping experience for all of life’s occasions, from a new baby to birthdays, weddings, girls’ nights out, graduations and new homes. Rather than splitting cleanly into a clothing store or a gift shop, the boutique blends both, with apparel, baby items, accessories and home goods sharing space on the same sales floor, a mix that reflects Webb’s own background moving through different corners of retail before settling on a single storefront that could hold all of them at once.

The clothing racks cover a wide range of everyday pieces, tops, bottoms, dresses, matching sets, loungewear and rompers, styled for a customer who wants something wearable rather than strictly occasion-based, along with a baby and kids section that keeps the shop relevant for the steady run of showers that fill a small town’s calendar. A jewelry case runs alongside it with necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings, and an accessories section covers purses, sunglasses and hair pieces, which together make the store function as a full outfit stop rather than a single-category boutique, the kind of place where a customer can walk in for one item and leave with a complete look pulled together from three different sections of the floor.

Where the shop leans hardest into its name is the gift section, candles from brands including Capri Blue and Sweet Grace, spa and beauty products, stationery and greeting cards, Nora Fleming pieces and home decor chosen with an eye toward hostess gifts, baby shower presents and the kind of small, thoughtful item that fills the space between a card and a major present. The gift section in particular rewards browsing rather than a targeted search, since the mix of candles, stationery and Nora Fleming pieces changes often enough that a customer looking for one specific item may leave with something else entirely. Webb has built the shop’s identity around the phrase shop small, positioning it as a favorite stop for gifts, apparel, baby items, accessories and everything in between rather than any single category, and that community-first framing shows up directly in how she talks about the business, less as a boutique competing with national chains and more as a local fixture built for the specific occasions that come up in a small city’s social calendar.

The shop’s South 9th Street storefront sits squarely within Opelika’s historic downtown shopping district, an easy walk from the antique malls, galleries and other boutiques that fill the surrounding blocks of restored railroad-era buildings, blocks that owe much of their current life to Opelika Main Street, the nonprofit that has worked since 1987 to grow and enhance the downtown core. For visitors putting together a downtown Opelika shopping day, The Surcie Shoppe works well as a stop for a spontaneous gift, a shower present, or simply an outfit picked up on the way to something else, which is more or less the entire point behind its name. As a shop opened in 2022, it is also one of the newer additions to a downtown that mixes long-running family businesses with younger storefronts like Webb’s, a combination that keeps the district’s inventory changing even as the buildings themselves stay the same.
