Bakers on Main
About
Bakers on Main has occupied a vintage brick building at 336 Gunter Ave in the Historic District of downtown Lake Guntersville, Alabama since it opened in 2011. Owner Lisa Baker runs the marketplace, which has grown over the years into one of the larger retail destinations along Gunter Ave, drawing shoppers who want to browse dozens of small businesses under one roof rather than hopping storefront to storefront. Housing that many independent vendors inside a single historic building takes a fair amount of coordination, and the marketplace model has let smaller sellers who might not otherwise afford their own standalone storefront reach shoppers in the middle of downtown.

Inside the brick building, Bakers on Main houses roughly 25 individual retail shops and boutiques, each stocked by its own vendor and covering a wide range of categories. Shoppers can move from home décor and gift items to baby products, clothing, jewelry, pottery, furniture, and lamps, all within the same building. A wine shop operates alongside the retail vendors, giving the marketplace a beverage component that sets it apart from a typical gift shop, and a beer selection rounds out that part of the offering. Folding a wine and beer selection into a building otherwise full of home goods and clothing boutiques gives Bakers on Main a broader draw than a straightforward gift shop, appealing to shoppers who might stop in for a bottle as much as for a gift.
The building also holds a café, known as Cafe 336, giving visitors a place to sit down for a bite in the middle of a shopping trip rather than having to leave the building to eat. That combination of retail, food, and drink under one roof has made Bakers on Main a stop that can fill an afternoon on its own, particularly for visitors exploring downtown Guntersville and the nearby City Harbor area for the first time.

Beyond day-to-day retail, Bakers on Main runs a registry program for both baby showers and weddings, letting expecting parents and engaged couples set up a list for guests to shop from within the store. Staff put together gift baskets on request and offer complimentary gift wrapping, a detail that makes the marketplace a convenient stop for anyone shopping for a specific occasion rather than just browsing.
The building’s event space extends the business beyond retail entirely. Bakers on Main hosts weddings, receptions, reunions, showers, and fundraisers in the historic brick space, pairing the venue with catering partnerships and beverage service for groups that want a downtown setting with some built-in character. Hosting events inside a working marketplace means guests get a backdrop of curated shops and vintage architecture rather than a blank rental hall. That dual use, retail marketplace by day and event venue by arrangement, means the historic brick building stays active well beyond normal shopping hours, giving the business more than one way to draw people through its doors.

Lisa Baker has framed the business around supporting the rest of downtown rather than trying to be the only stop in town, noting that if the marketplace does not carry something a customer is looking for, staff will point them toward another shop nearby that might. That approach reflects the way Bakers on Main fits into the broader downtown Guntersville shopping district, functioning less like a single store competing with its neighbors and more like a hub that channels foot traffic through the historic district as a whole. It is a philosophy that fits naturally with a marketplace model, since a building already built around cooperation between two dozen internal vendors extends that same spirit outward to the rest of downtown.
Bakers on Main is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. Visitors with questions ahead of a trip can call (256) 582-1300 or reach the shop by email at lisa@bakersonmain.com, and the marketplace keeps an active presence on Facebook and Instagram for anyone who wants a preview of what is in stock before making the trip to Gunter Ave.
