Salon U
About
Salon U has operated out of downtown Homewood since June 2002, long enough that owner Issam Bajalia’s shop has become something of an institution along Linden Avenue. Housed in a modern, industrial-leaning space, it operates as an Aveda Lifestyle Salon, meaning the business runs on Aveda’s plant-based product line and training system across every service it offers, from color and cuts to skin care, nails, and massage.

That range of services sets Salon U apart from the more color-focused boutique salons scattered around Homewood. Rather than specializing narrowly, the salon built a full-service model under one roof, with hair stylists working alongside estheticians and massage therapists. James Thomas has been recognized as one of the salon’s top hair stylists, and Tatiana Ghilan has earned similar recognition for her esthetics work, both awards that the salon highlights as evidence of the depth of its team beyond the owner’s own reputation.
The salon’s hours reflect a full-service operation rather than a single stylist’s part-time chair rental. It is open Tuesday through Friday, with Wednesday through Friday running nine to six and Tuesday running later into the evening, plus one Saturday a month for clients who cannot make a weekday appointment. That schedule, along with dedicated phone hours separate from the salon’s operating hours, points to a business with enough staff and enough client volume to justify a more structured front-desk operation than a typical single-owner salon.

Salon U sits in the heart of downtown Homewood, a few blocks from the 18th Street and 28th Avenue shopping corridors that make up the city’s compact commercial core. The location has let the salon build a client base that treats a visit less as a quick errand and more as an afternoon appointment, particularly for guests booking combined hair and spa services in a single visit.

Since Aveda salons operate under a brand-wide certification and training system, Salon U’s stylists and estheticians go through Aveda-specific product and technique training in addition to their individual cosmetology or esthetics licensing. That structure gives the salon a consistent baseline of technique across its team while still leaving room for individual specialties to develop, the same way James Thomas and Tatiana Ghilan built recognizable reputations within the shop over more than two decades of the salon’s operation.
More than twenty years into its run on Linden Avenue, Salon U has become one of the longer-tenured independent businesses in downtown Homewood, predating a good portion of the boutiques and restaurants that now share the same blocks. That longevity, combined with its full-service model spanning hair, skin, nails, and massage, has made it a default recommendation for residents looking for a single salon that can handle most of what a special occasion or a routine maintenance appointment might require.
The salon’s Aveda affiliation also brings a plant-based, sustainability-focused product philosophy into every service, from the shampoos used at the wash bowl to the skin care products applied during a facial. That approach has become an increasingly common selling point for salons over the past decade, as more clients ask about the ingredients in the products used on their hair and skin, and Salon U’s two decades of Aveda-branded operation gives it a longer track record with that positioning than many newer entrants to the market. Between its tenure, its full range of services, and its central downtown Homewood address, Salon U has become one of the more dependable stops for residents who would rather build a relationship with one salon over the years than shop around for a different provider every time they need a different kind of appointment. More than two decades on Linden Avenue have let the shop grow a genuinely local following inside downtown Homewood.
