Ervin’s Work and Western

Northport $$

About

At the intersection of Highway 69 and Highway 82 in Northport, Alabama, Ervin’s Work and Western has been outfitting West Alabama with boots and work clothes since 1964. Ervin Koon and his wife Polly opened the original store with the idea that hardworking people deserved sturdy, well made products at a fair price, and that founding principle has carried the business through six decades and a change in ownership.

Van and Sheila James took over Ervin’s in 1999 and have kept the store family owned and operated since, expanding the Northport location into what the company now calls its flagship store, the largest of its locations in both floor space and selection. The shelves carry work and western boots from Red Wing, Georgia Boot, Justin, Carhartt, Wolverine, Lucchese, Ariat, Rocky, and Double H, along with flame resistant clothing, denim, outerwear, and hats for men, women, and kids.

In recent years, the store folded in Christy’s Boutique, a women’s clothing shop that had operated under its own name in Northport for close to seventeen years before joining the Ervin’s family. Christy’s now occupies its own corner of the Northport store, offering handpicked, limited quantity fashion, jewelry, and accessories alongside the work and western inventory that built the original business. The boutique’s founder describes the space as a place meant to feel welcoming rather than transactional, somewhere customers can browse without being rushed.

The combined store gives Northport shoppers an unusual range under one roof, steel toe work boots and flame resistant coveralls on one side, dresses, tops, and jewelry on the other. It is a pairing that reflects the practical character of the town itself, a place where a customer might need waterproof boots for a job site in the morning and a going out top for the evening, and can find both without crossing the river into Tuscaloosa.

Ervin’s also operates a second location in Tuscaloosa and a smaller outfitters store in Berry, but the Northport store remains the anchor, open six days a week with a staff that includes employees who have worked the floor for years and can talk through fit, break in time, and durability for a specific boot or brand. The store’s roots in 1964 Northport give it a longevity that few retailers along Highway 69 can claim, and decades later it still operates under the same family first philosophy the Koons started with.

The brands carried span both function and fashion, from Carhartt work pants and Wrangler jeans to Justin and Lucchese western boots built for the show ring as much as the barn. Kids are not an afterthought either, with boots, jeans, and outerwear sized for the youngest customers, a detail that keeps multiple generations of the same family shopping under one roof rather than splitting trips between stores.

Fitting boots is treated as a craft in its own right at Ervin’s, with staff trained to measure width as carefully as length and to explain the break in period for a specific leather or sole before a customer commits to a pair. That attention matters in a region where boots are bought for long shifts on a job site or long days in a deer stand rather than for looks alone, and it is part of why customers drive in from smaller towns across West Alabama rather than shopping online.

For visitors exploring Northport’s shopping beyond the antique shops and gift stores of Main Avenue, Ervin’s offers a look at a different, more workaday side of the town’s retail history, one built on boots, denim, and the kind of service that remembers a customer’s name. Sixty years after Ervin and Polly Koon opened their doors, the store still trades on the same idea that brought customers in the first place, that quality gear and straightforward service are worth a drive.
