Santos Coffee – Acton Road

Vestavia Hills $
Family owned Farm-direct roasting Open daily Single-origin coffee

About

On the Vestavia Hills side of Cahaba River Road, in the Altadena Square shopping area, Santos Coffee runs a cafe that shares more with its Guatemalan farm roots than most coffee shops in the Birmingham suburbs. The Acton Road location, opened in the shopping node near Timberlake Road, is one of several cafes operated by a family that has been growing coffee for five generations.

Santos Coffee is owned by sisters Wendy Padilla-Madden and Katie Ellis, who grew up on their family’s coffee farms in Guatemala before bringing the business to Birmingham. That background shapes the menu directly: the coffee served here is grown on the family’s own land, imported, and roasted locally, rather than sourced through a distributor. The company also ties its sales to a mission of providing clean water to Guatemalan families connected to the farms.

The family’s coffee history goes back to 1895, when the sisters’ ancestors began cultivating coffee in Guatemala’s Santa Rosa highlands. The farms carry their own names and founding dates: San Antonio, planted in 1895 at roughly 1,700 meters of elevation; Santa Margarita, established in 1917 at about 1,450 meters; and San Nicolas, added in 1985 at a similar elevation. Wendy and Katie have said they grew up learning to plant, harvest, roast, grind, and drink the family’s coffee, and along the way they found handwritten letters from their grandmothers, Marta and Piedad, describing the work of holding onto the land back in the 1930s. The company credits those grandmothers as being among the first female coffee farm owners in Guatemala.

The sisters opened their first Alabama cafe in Tuscaloosa before building out the current list of Birmingham-area locations, which now includes cafes in Gardendale, Hoover, Homewood, Mountain Brook, and an Uptown spot along with the Acton Road shop in Vestavia Hills. The named blends served across those cafes, like the San Antonio, Santa Margarita, and San Nicolas roasts, map directly back to the three family farms, each carrying its own roast profile from medium to medium-dark, with decaf also available. Santos also runs a coffee subscription program that ships freshly roasted beans on a set schedule, with plans ranging from one bag a month up to four, and the company frames its identity around what it calls coffee, culture, and community, hosting tastings, workshops, and festive events at its cafes throughout the year. Orders from the Acton Road location can also be placed through DoorDash and Toast for pickup or delivery.

The Acton Road cafe keeps long, dependable hours, open every day of the week from early morning through late afternoon, which makes it a workable stop whether the visit is a Tuesday commute or a Sunday afternoon coffee run. The space favors quick, efficient service, with a menu built around espresso drinks and drip coffee brewed from the family’s own roasts. Weekday afternoons bring a standing discount as well, with a long list of drinks marked down after 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, a detail regulars have learned to plan errands around.

What sets Santos apart from a typical suburban coffee shop is the direct line between farm and cup. The beans poured at the Acton Road counter trace back to specific plots the family has worked for generations, and the shop leans into that story with named single-origin roasts rather than generic house blends. For customers who care where their coffee actually comes from, that traceability is the draw.

The Acton Road shop is part of a small, locally owned group of Santos Coffee cafes scattered around greater Birmingham, in neighborhoods like Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Gardendale, all operated by the same family rather than franchised out. That local ownership, paired with the farm-to-cup story, gives the Vestavia Hills location a different feel than a standard chain coffee stop, even with the convenience of a location tucked into a familiar shopping center just off Cahaba River Road.
