Folklore Brewing & Meadery, Dothan
About
Tucked into a converted space on Mary Lou Lane, Folklore Brewing & Meadery has become one of the most talked about gathering spots in Dothan since it opened as the city’s first packaging brewery since Prohibition. The taproom pours its own beer and mead just a few miles from downtown, and it draws a mix of longtime Wiregrass families and newcomers curious about what a working farm brewery looks like up close.
The story behind Folklore starts on a family farm dating back to 1962, and that agricultural root still shows in how the business is run. Brewmaster Jeremy Pate leads production of a rotating lineup that includes Snipe Hunt IPA, Southern Sky Pils, Front Porch Pale Ale, Shadowcaster Porter, Grateful Red Ale, Mid-Light Crisis Blonde Ale, and 231 South Blonde Ale, alongside the meads that give the business its full name. Because the brewery also holds a sister location in Enterprise, regulars sometimes debate which taproom pours a better pint, but the Dothan location is where the story began.
What sets Folklore apart from a typical taproom is how deliberately it is built for everybody in the family, including the four legged members. Well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome throughout the space, and children of all ages are part of the regular crowd, which makes it a rare brewery where a Tuesday evening might include a stroller parked next to a flight of beer. The front porch atmosphere is central to the design, with outdoor seating meant to encourage lingering rather than rushing through a pint.

Live music plays a real role in the calendar here. Folk, Americana, and bluegrass acts take the stage regularly, and the brewery hosts a running slate of community events that includes Pickin in the Park sessions, trivia nights, board game nights, and even the occasional spelling bee. Dothan Songwriters events have also found a home at Folklore, giving local musicians a stage that feels more like a living room than a concert hall.

Hunger is covered on site as well. Fly by Night Grill serves casual bar food including a pretzel with beer cheese, pizza, and bone-in wings, while Stacked rounds out the food options with its own menu, and Blue Moon Cafe handles catering for private events. Anyone planning a shower, rehearsal dinner, or company gathering can also rent the facility outright, which has made Folklore a fixture for private parties around the Wiregrass.
The taproom keeps a schedule built around the workweek rhythm of the area. It opens at 4 PM on Monday through Wednesday, shifts to a 2 PM start on Thursday, stretches into an 11 AM to 11 PM window on Friday and Saturday for the busiest crowds, and settles into a relaxed 1 PM to 7 PM Sunday session. That range gives visitors several different ways to experience the space, from a quiet weekday pour to a packed Saturday night with a band on stage.

For visitors exploring Dothan’s food and drink scene for the first time, Folklore Brewing & Meadery offers a useful anchor point. It is family run, it is unmistakably local, and it treats brewing as just one part of a larger commitment to bringing the community together on a piece of land with real history behind it. Whether the goal is a flight of seasonal beers, a glass of house mead, or simply a porch to sit on with a dog at your feet, Folklore delivers an experience that feels distinct from a standard taproom visit.
First time visitors are often surprised at how much ground the property covers, from the main taproom bar to the porch seating to the rotating food trucks and vendors set up on busier nights. Because the brewery doubles as an event space, the crowd on any given evening can range from a quiet handful of regulars nursing a porter to a full house gathered for a songwriter showcase. That range is part of the appeal, and it is a large reason Folklore has settled into its role as one of the more dependable stops for anyone touring Dothan’s small, independently owned bars and breweries.
